Milford second graders make a difference with trees

MILFORD – Students at Mispillion Elementary School want to help the environment, one tree at a time.

The students raised $536 to plant 536 trees in the rain forests around the world through the One Tree Planted organization. It is a non-profit in Vermont that works to create environmental sustainability across the world.

Briana Johnson is a second-grade teacher at Mispillion Elementary School. She and her students got the idea after reading a book in class.

The students read “Judy Moody Saves the World” that is about how a student and her class find ways to help the environment. At the end of the book, they do something like the students at Mispillion decided to do, explained Ms. Johnson.

The students at Mispillion Elementary School decided to do a coin drive fundraiser with a small twist. They got to raise money to pie the teacher of their choice.

The school set up jars for each teacher and students put the money in for the teacher they wanted to see get a pie in the face. The fundraiser lasted two weeks for the entire school. The second-grade classes organized the fundraiser.

Because it was the school’s first time doing the fundraiser, they were not sure what to expect. However, they were very happy with the results and wanted to take part in being pied.

“At the end when we figured out how much money we had, we decided that it would be worth it if we all just got pied,” said Ms. Johnson. “And the actual pieing process was so much fun.

“The kids loved it, and the entire school came outside to watch us get pied.”

The entire school enjoyed being a part of this fundraiser, and Ms. Johnson hopes to repeat this fundraiser in the future.

“I think it would be a great idea to continue it every year,” said Ms. Johnson.

The students were not only excited about getting the chance to see their teachers get pied. They were really excited about raising enough money to plant over 500 trees.

They were not expecting as big of a turnout.

“When we realized that we had raised $536 we were very excited,” said Ms. Johnson. “Then when we told the kids how much we raised they were super excited too because we can plant that many trees in the rain forest and that’s a lot of trees.
