MILFORD — All Milford School District schools will reopen on Monday as a police investigation continues.

The schools were closed Friday, following threats and a lockdown the day before, and a suspect is still being sought.

Late Friday afternoon, Milford police said they are still trying to locate Thomas Caffrey, 59, of Lincoln, in connection with the incident. Police said investigators have obtained a warrant from the Justice of the Peace Court for harassment charges.

Details about what occurred have not been released by police or the school district.

“We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we have worked with our police partners to navigate yesterday's threat,” a Friday afternoon statement from the district said. “At this time, we will continue to maintain an increased police presence on our grounds as an extra precaution.”

“We would like to thank you for your support and acknowledgement that as a district we are not able to share specific details regarding this matter as it is an active police investigation.”

According to a statement on the district’s Facebook page, around the time of dismissal for students Thursday, a “credible threat” was made toward the schools, after which all six facilities went into lockdown protocols.

Soon after, the Milford Police Department, with the aid of constables and school resource officers, were able to determine that the threat did not affect the four elementary schools, the district reported, and those buildings were able to dismiss students without interruption.

Dismissal was delayed for Milford Central Academy and Milford High School, which are on one campus, the post read. After-school activities were also canceled Thursday.

District officials said they decided to close schools Friday as a precaution.

“We want to be very clear that the Milford School District takes the safety and security of our students, staff and facilities very seriously and it remains our top priority,” the statement read. “District leadership will continue to debrief this situation and reflect upon our procedures and communications working directly with all community and safety resources.

“We continue to ask for your patience and cooperation allowing the district to communicate and provide direction as needed.”

Late Thursday night, Milford police posted a separate statement, seeking public assistance in locating Mr. Caffrey, stating officers wished to speak with him regarding a “terroristic threatening incident that occurred within the Milford city limits.”

On Friday afternoon, public information officer Sgt. Timothy Maloney confirmed that Mr. Caffrey was being sought in connection with the incident at the schools.

Sgt. Maloney did not disclose any further details about the case, saying more would be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Mr. Caffrey can call Milford police at 302-422-8081.
