Milford Museum to host first screening of film on MHS integration

Posted

MILFORD — The Milford Museum will host the premiere screening of “In Due Course: Integrating Milford High School” at 1 p.m. April 6 at the Milford Public Library, 11 S.E. Front St.

Filmmaker Michael Oates will introduce the documentary and take part in a Q&A afterward.

“In Due Course” examines the failed 1954 attempt to desegregate Milford High and the successful admission of Black students to the school in 1962. It also explores the reasons for the major shift in community values.

Segments from interviews tell the story in the movie, including from Ed Kee (co-author of “The Milford Eleven”); Edna Turner Sharp (one of the 1954 Milford 11); Charles Hammond Jr. and Josephus Clark (two of the 1962 Milford Seven); Edward Steiner and Dr. Karl Western (White Milford High students of the time); Dr. Reba Hollingsworth; and Dr. Alvin Turner (Ms. Turner Sharp’s younger brother).

The film provides a better understanding of Milford’s little-known Black history, as it relates to the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, which marked the end of legalized racial segregation in U.S. schools.
