In an Opinion in the Daily State News, Mr. Frank Daniels asked why Democrats are attempting to ruin democracy (“Why are Democrats trying to destroy democracy?”). My contention is that his beloved Republican Party is the culprit here.
I would, therefore, like to refer him to an article in the July 19 edition, concerning the withdrawal of $9 billion already allocated to public broadcasting and foreign aid. There, he will learn that this action passed, even though “(s)ome Republicans were uncomfortable with the cuts, yet supported them anyway, wary of crossing (Donald) Trump or upsetting his agenda.” So much for voting your conscience.
There was also some concern that Congress was “ceding its spending powers to the executive branch.” There was some concern but, obviously, not enough to risk annoying their master.
Our “democracy” at work.
I would also suggest that denying about $1 billion to public broadcasting has little to do with fiscal responsibility but much to do with further eroding our rapidly disappearing “free speech” rights.
