C-SD Sports Interest Meeting

Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s Sports Interest Meeting will be held Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. in the C-SD auditorium. Parents and students are encouraged to attend.

Information will be provided on Dorchester County Public Schools’ athletic eligibility in the coming academic year as well as required forms/paperwork, and student-athletes will be able to meet with various coaches of sports for every athletic season.

ND volleyball

Try-outs for the 2023 Eagles Volleyball teams will be held on Aug. 9-10, with possible additional days if needed. They will be from 4-6 p.m. at the NDHS gym. Athletes must have all paperwork completed to tryout - no exceptions.

This includes the online athletic packet, two signature sheets and a current physical with clearance to participate. Visit DCPS.K12.md.us to find the Required Paperwork section.

Shore Golf Classic

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore (BBBSES) has announced the 14th Annual Eastern Shore Golf Classic (ESGC). The tournament will be held Aug. 7 at the River Marsh Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Bay Golf Resort in Cambridge.

Participants will play 18 holes with a golf cart, gift, lunch, and entry to the awards reception. Prizes will be awarded for Hole-in-One and Closest-to-the Pin challenges, first and second place team net, and first and second place team gross.

Eastern Neck NWR Deer Hunt

Beginning Aug. 9, at 10 a.m., Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) hunting permits will be available online at recreation.gov or by phone at (877) 444-6777. Regulations and dates for the 2023-24 deer hunt are now available on the refuge website at fws.gov/refuge/eastern-neck.  

There are changes to this year’s regulations. Only one hunter per permit is allowed; group members may no longer be added to a permit. This change now allows hunters to present their valid hunting permit either electronically or on paper.

This year, all hunts at Eastern Neck will take place during October. There will be no primitive hunt.

Taylors Island

The 2023 Taylors Island Boat Docking Challenge will take place on Aug. 27 at the Slaughter Creek Marina.

Golf fundraiser

University of Maryland Memorial Hospital Foundation has scheduled its annual golf tournament fundraiser for Aug. 28, at Talbot Country Club in Easton.

Team registrations of $1,500 and sponsorships ranging from $500-$10,000 are available. Registrations will be accepted through Aug. 8.

The tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a single tee start. Lunch, snacks and beverages will be served on the course. Following the tournament, there will be a reception and awards ceremony along with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Blackwater Deer Hunt Permits

Beginning July 11, at 10 a.m., Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) hunting permits will be available online at www.recreation.gov or by phone at (877) 444-6777. Regulations and dates for the 2023-24 deer hunt are now available on the refuge website at fws.gov/refuge/blackwater

Only one hunter per permit is allowed; group members may no longer be added to a permit. This allows hunters to present their valid hunting permit either electronically or on paper.

Stands and blinds must be removed daily from the refuge. This applies to all hunt units on the refuge, including U1.

Hunters are reminded that deer drives are allowed during the January shotgun hunts only.  Lastly, a state-issued sika deer stamp is now required to hunt sika deer during any of the deer hunting seasons.

Girls’ Open Gym

Mace’s Lane Middle School will host a girls’ open gym Aug. 2, from 1:30-3 p.m. Admission is a one-time fee of $10. The objectives of the program are to focus on developing basketball IQ, basic skills and mild conditioning. Visit forms.gle/tYo25Y2tnHHSEKbE6 to register.

Recreation and Parks

Reggie Parker Open Basketball Gym

Offered to all students who will enter 6th-12th grade in the fall of 2023. Location will be North Dorchester Middle School, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, until Aug. 3. The open gym will be free to all participants.

Youth Soccer

For ages 8-10 Juniors, and 11-14 Seniors. No high school students. Fee per player is $50.
