Local roundup: Henlopen track teams post top-five finishes; DSU men lose heartbreaker

Three Henlopen Conference teams placed in the top three in the boys’ meet while Smyrna High took fourth in the girls’ team standings at the DIAA indoor track & field state championships on Saturday.

The meet was held at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Salesianum won the boys’ team title with 111 points while Cape Henlopen (57) was second, Dover (46.5) was third and Smyrna (40) placed fifth.

Padua won the team crown in the girls’ meet with 134.6 points, ahead of second-place St. Mark’s (113.83). Smyrna totaled 47 points.

Individually, in the boys’ meet, Sussex Tech’s Yougendy Maauricette won both the 55-meter hurdles (7.76) and 400 meters (50.70). Smyrna’s Demetri Carter captured the 55 meters (6.42), Dover’s Munir Powell-Holloman won the high jump (21-2.75) and Polytech’s Matt Gatune took the 800 (1:58.60)

On the girls’ side, Dover’s Jamyla Davis won the 55-meter hurdles (8.92) while Sussex Academy’s Sadie Tunnell won the 400 meters (59.40).

Boys’ basketball

Milford 78, Sussex Tech 69: The Buccaneers improved to 10-7 with the Henlopen North win on Friday.

Laurel 67, Great Oaks 66: Kylse Wilson netted 19 points as the Bulldogs edged Great Oaks on Friday night.

Nifere Griffin added 11 points for Laurel, which led by four at halftime.

Girls’ basketball

Caesar Rodney 62, Sussex Central 31: The Riders led by only a point before using a 20-6, second-quarter run to break open the Henlopen North contest.

Stacey Deputy tallied 17 points for CR with Teri Bell adding 14.
Blair Darmstadter scored 11 for the Golden Knights.

College basketball

MEN, North Carolina Central 84, Delaware State 79, OT: The Hornets led by 12 points with less than five minutes to play in regulation, but failed to hold on in their 19th straight loss.

The Hornets led 73-70 when NCCU’s Justin Wright nailed a three-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the second half to force the extra period.

Delaware State was ahead 79-77 after a basket by John Stansbury with 2:07 left in overtime, but the Eagles scored the last seven points to complete the comeback win.

John Stansbury scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Hornets. Stansbury was 8-for-12 from the field, including three three-pointers on four attempts.

Myles Carter added 22 points to raise his career total to 981. Carter also had 12 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season.

WOMEN, North Carolina Central 73, Delaware State 49: Janasia Law came off the bench to net 15 points with seven rebounds to lead the Hornets in the MEAC loss.

Alexis Moragne chipped in with 12 points while Sianny Sanchez-Oliver tallied 11.

College softball

Blue Hens drop two: Delaware fell 8-4 to Boston University before having a rally come up just short in a 3-2 setback to Purdue in Georgia.

Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) led Delaware (4-4) against BU with two hits while Kailey Christian had a hit and two RBI. Glanden added an RBI single against Purdue.

DSU swept in opener: Hartford pitchers allowed just one unearned run and 11 hits in a 1-0, 7-1 sweep of Delaware State in a season-opening softball doubleheader.

Second baseman Felicity Munoz had two of Delaware State’s five hits in the opener. In game two, first baseman Jaelyn Baker had two of Delaware State’s six hits in the game.

College baseball

Manhattan 11, Delaware 1: Manhattan scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back as the Blue Hens fell to 0-2.

J.J. Freeman recorded two hits for Delaware while Bryce Greenly (Milford), John Weglarz, Jake Dunion and Joseph Carpenter each added one.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Longwood 15, Delaware State 7: Gwenna Gentle and Emmy McGill led the Hornets with two goals apiece in their season-opening loss. Rosella Nardi also recorded a multi-point game with a goal and an assist.

Penn 15, Delaware 4: The No. 20 Quakers tallied the game’s first 12 goals before dropping the Blue Hens to 0-2.
