Local roundup: Fast start sends Dover girls past Seahawks

Superia Clark netted six goals and an assist as Dover High downed Sussex Academy, 13-8, in Henlopen Conference girls’ lacrosse on Wednesday night.

Kyleigh Dill had five goals and an assist for the Senators (8-1 in conference, 9-3 overall), who opened up a 10-2 lead at halftime. Ashtyn Torbert tallied Dover’s other two goals.

Senators goalie Regan Torbert made nine saves, including the school-record 400th of her career.

The Seahawks (7-2 in conference, 10-2 overall) out-shot Dover, 24-21.

Polytech 20, Smyrna 13: Molly Kenney netted five goals while Danielle Conn added three in the Panthers’ Henlopen Conference win.

 Claire Fuchs scored the 100th goal of her career while Adelyn Mollohan made five saves.

Caesar Rodney 13, Milford 3: Lyndsey Weller netted four goals and an assist as the Riders evened their record at 6-6.

Elise Hensley (1 assist), Ellie Hardee, Rylie Faircloth (1 assist) and Brianna Simpson all scored twice for CR while Melissa dolt made six saves.

Hanna Zimmerman scored two of the Buccaneers’ goals and Marlie McMillan made 10 saves.

Cape Henlopen 18, Sussex Tech 1: The Vikings tallied 11 first-half goals before picking up the win.

Boys’ lacrosse

Smyrna 11, Polytech 4: The Eagles raised their record to 8-5 by posting their fourth win in a row.

Dover 19, Sussex Central 3: The Senators (8-5) used a 10-goal second quarter to pull away to their fourth straight win.

Cape Henlopen 24, Sussex Tech 0: Henry D’Ambrogi tallied six goals and two assists in the Vikings’ Henlopen North victory.

Michael Frederick (1 assist), Jake Truitt (2 assists) and Joseph Coveleski (2 assists) all scored three goals for Cape.

Girls’ soccer

Smyrna 5, Sussex Academy 1: Desiree Zapata netted four goals and an assist, including three second-half goals, in the Eagles’ win.

Marlayna Pennington scored the first goal for Smyrna (11-2), which led 2-1 at halftime.

Caravel 3, Polytech 0: The Buccaneers scored three second-half goals to break a scoreless tie.

Delaney Dillon made five saves for the Panthers, who were out-shot, 8-2.

Delmar 4, Delmarva Christian 1: Maci Bradford tallied three first-half goals to lead the Wildcats to the win on Tuesday.

Jordyn Bunting added a goal in the second half while Kelly Davis made seven saves.

The Royals got a goal from Ainsley Bell and 12 saves from Grace Fiorilla.

Baseball

Delmar 17, Sussex Academy 4: Jack Ford, Luke Waters, Julian Burdett, Aaron Rhodes, Tucker Pierson and Caden Parker all homered for the Wildcats (9-3) in the South win on Tuesday.

John Donahue had a homerun for the Seahawks.

Memorial

CR to honor Schonewolf: Caesar Rodney High will hold a celebration of life for former football coach and athletic director Mike Schoenwolf on May 15 at 10 a.m. in the school’s stadium.

Schonewolf died in December in Florida, where he had lived for the last five years. He worked at CR for 20 years.

College

Hornet wins golf title: Delaware State’s Baipor Khunsri captured the PGA WORKS Minority Collegiate Women’s Singles Championship on Wednesday.

Khunsri posted a third-round score of 74 for a three-day total of 221 to win the title by five strokes over runner-up Madison Lake of Texas A&M-Kingsville. It was the first individual title by a Hornet since the team was formed in 2014.

Khunsri led after each day of the three-day event and was ahead by five strokes entering the final round.

“This is a big deal for our program,” said Delaware State coach Rick McCall. “She (Baipor) was strong from tee to green all during the tournament. Her mental approach was outstanding all week. Each time she had a bogey or double, she’d follow with a birdie to stay on course.”

In the team competition, Delaware State finished second in the eight-team tournament with a three-day total of 956.

Bowling

DSU’s Robb advances in nationals: Delaware State’s Katie Robb is two wins away from becoming a national champion.

Robb won two matches on Wednesday in the United State Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championship Tournament in Grand Rapids, Mich., to advance to Saturday’s nationally televised Final 4.

Robb won her first match of the day vs. Rebekah Loker of Ottawa Univ. (Kan.) 613-573. The Delaware State standout won 616 to 607 over Victoria Giardina of Lawrence Tech to reach the final four.

Men’s lacrosse

Six Hens make All-CAA: Delaware’s Owen Grant was named the program’s first CAA Defensive Player of the Year in men’s lacrosse while Mike Robinson becoming the third Blue Hen to receive the CAA Rookie of the Year nod.

They were joined on the All-CAA first Tteam by Charlie Kitchen. Tye Kurtz was named second team All-CAA, while Cam Acchione, Joe Speers and Robinson earned All-Rookie Team honors.

Grant ranks second in Division I in caused turnovers per game (2.40) and led the nation’s 18th-best scoring defense. The third-year defenseman leads the Hens and ranks fourth in the conference with 3.80 ground balls per game.

Robinson ranks third in the nation in goals per game (3.23) and is tied for second in Division I with 42 goals scored. Kitchen leads the team with 50 points on 25 goals and 25 assists.

Top-seeded Delaware opens the CAA Tournament with a semifinal-round matchup at No. 4 Hofstra today at 4 p.m.

College football

Rocco third in award voting: Delaware football coach Danny Rocco finished in third place for the STATS Perform FCS Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award.

In his fourth season at the helm of the Blue Hens, Rocco has Delaware in the NCAA playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons.

Rocco was a finalist for national coach of the year for the seventh time in his 15-year career. He was the winner of the AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year award, also making him a finalist for the AFCA National Coach of the Year honor.

The Robinson Award is selected by a 40-member national media panel. Virginia Military Institute coach Scott Wachenheim was this season’s winner.

Wachenheim served as the offensive coordinator for Rocco’s first three seasons as a head coach at Liberty University from 2006-08.
