Local Roundup: CR girls earn 16-2 victory over Brandywine in lacrosse

Eight players scored goals as Caesar Rodney High opened the season with a 16-2 victory over Brandywine in girls’ lacrosse on Monday afternoon.

With last year’s spring season wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic, this is the first time high school spring sports have been played in Delaware since March of 2019.

Senior Brianna Simpson and freshman Rylie Faircloth netted five goals for CR with Melissa Dolt making five saves.

Milford 15, Hodgson 7: The Buccaneers picked up the win in the program’s first varsity contest.

Boys’ lacrosse

Milford 13, Delmar 9: Troy Donavon tallied four goals with Landan Hajek adding four goals and five assists as the Buccaneers opened the season with a victory.

Also for Milford, Bryce Wells scored twice.

Girls’ soccer

Polytech 9, Woodbridge 0: Freshman McKinley Boyce netted a pair of goals and an assist to pace the Panthers in their opener.

Megan Popp and Cecilia Rivera both added a goal and two assists as eight players scored for Polytech, which netted six second-half goals.

Milford 12, McKean 0: The Buccaneers tallied eight first-half goals en route to the opening win.

Caravel 8, Delmarva Christian 0: The Buccaneers tallied all eight of their goals in the first half.

Grace Fiorilla made a pair of saves for the Royals, who were out-shot 10-3.

Baseball

St. Elizabeth 20, First State Military 4: Jaydan Duncan had the Bulldogs’ only two hits in the season-opening loss.

Softball

Woodbridge 26, Early College 0: The Blue Raiders opened the season with a shutout victory.

College lacrosse

UD men up to No. 14: Following the Delaware men’s lacrosse team’s 13-12 overtime victory over Towson on Saturday, the Blue Hens moved up to 14th in the USILA Coaches and Inside Lacrosse Media polls.

Delaware has won six straight games to mark the program’s longest regular-season winning streak since the 2006 campaign. During the recent stretch, the Hens have outscored the opposition, 94-61.

Delaware returns to action on April 2 when it welcomes Fairfield to Delaware Stadium for a noon CAA matchup.

College volleyball

Pair or Hornets honored: Delaware State volleyball players Mayah Ngundam and Valeria Otero have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Ngundam was named the MEAC’s Co-Player of the Week after totaling 36 kills and seven blocks in three matches. She recorded a season-high 13 kills on 18 attacks (.556) in DSU’s 3-0 win over Morgan State on March 15.

Otero earned her third MEAC Rookie of the Week award, and fourth overall, this season. She recorded 40 kills (13.3 avg. per match) and 35 digs (11.7 per match) in three contests. Her week was highlighted by a 16-kill, 17-dig performance (each a career-high) vs. Coppin State on March 18.

College soccer

Hens’ Ruth earns CAA honor: Delaware freshman forward Justin Ruth was named the CAA Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring both the Blue Hens’ goals in Sunday’s 2-2 tie with Drexel.
