Local roundup: CR, Cape sweep team titles at county cross country meets

Smyrna High’s Kelly Barr won the girls’ individual title while Polytech’s Kenny Guy took the boys’ crown as the Kent County cross country championship meet was held on Wednesday afternoon.

Barr, a senior, finished the Killens Pond State Park course in 19:59 while Guy, also a senior, was clocked in 15:53.

Caesar Rodney won both the boys’ and girls’ team titles. The Riders’ boys tied with Polytech at 42 points apiece but won the tiebreaker based on its sixth finisher.

In the Sussex County meet on Wednesday, Cape Henlopen’s Ryan Baker won the boys’ title in a school-record time of 15:23 at Sandhill Fields near Georgetown. The Vikings also won the boys’ team championship.

Indian River’s Brynn Crandell captured the girls’ crown in a school-record time of 17:58. Cape Henlopen and Sussex Academy both finished with 40 team points with the Vikings winning the championship by tiebreaker.

Volleyball

Smyrna 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Eagles posted a 25-11, 25-8, 25-13 Henlopen North win over the Ravens on Tuesday night.

Sklar Berge (7 kills, 5 aces), Karalyn Osborne (4 kills, 1 ace, 13 assists) and Anna Richardson (5 kills, 3 aces) paced Smyrna.

Boys’ soccer

Milford 4, Smyrna 1: Alexander Davis scored twice with Brandon Zelaya Hernandez also scoring for the Buccaneers in the Henlopen North win on Tuesday.

Daniel Lerro scored for the Eagles.

College basketball

UD women tie for top of CAA poll: After returning most of its roster from last year’s regular-season championship squad, the Delaware women’s basketball team tied for first n the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll released on Wednesday.

The Blue Hens tied with Drexel, which beat Delaware in the CAA tournament finals to reach the NCAA Tournament. The Hens reached the semifinals of the WNIT.

Also for Delaware, reigning CAA Player of the Year Jasmine Dickey was selected as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year. Senior forward Ty Battle, a first-team All-CAA selection a season ago, joins Dickey on the preseason first team.

“Preseason highlights and accolades are a tribute to the tireless work that has been done on and off the court,” said UD coach Natasha Adair. “Our players believed in and trusted the process from day one. They came here to develop holistically, compete on a national stage and to win championships.”

As a junior, Dickey averaged 22.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 1.9 assists and 0.6 blocks per game. Dickey ranked 12th in scoring and led the way in the CAA in steals and second in scoring.

Battle averaged a career-best 12.0 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.76 steals, 1.5 assists and 1.03 blocks per game. She finished second in the nation with a career-high 19 double-doubles.

The Hens open the season by hosting Chestnut Hill College on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. and then welcome Princeton on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

The CAA men’s preseason poll will be announced on Thursday.
