Local roundup: Camden-Wyoming takes Junior League baseball title; Smyrna-Clayton wins Senior state opener

Camden-Wyoming blanked MOT, 10-0, on Friday night to capture the District I title in Junior League baseball.

C-W went 3-0 in the six-team tournament, out-scoring its opponents by a combined 33-2.

Camden-Wyoming has won the District I crown in Junior League for four seasons in a row and nine times since 2003.

The Junior League state tournament starts on July 22 at Pike Creek in Newark. Camden-Wyoming faces District III champion Mid-Sussex at 7 p.m. in the opener of the three-team, double-elimination tourney.

In Friday’s victory, Shane Powell allowed only two hits and a pair of walks in five 2/3 shutout innings for C-W. He also struck out 10 and went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Gavin Johnson had three RBI for Camden-Wyoming, reliever Cam Allen closed out the shutout while Finn Dyer had a two-run single.

Joseph Trincia and Matthew Ceban had MOT’s hits.

Major League

District I Tournament

Smyrna-Clayton 11, Felton 1: The victory on Thursday put Smyrna-Clayton in the District I winn3: ers’ bracket finals.

Smyrna-Clayton (2-0) were slated to face MOT (1-0) on Saturday at Milford with the winner advancing to Monday night’s championship game.

MOT 1, Milford 0: The Milford squad earned its spot in the winner’s bracket with narrow win on Thursday evening.

8-10 District I Tournament

Camden-Wyoming 7, Smyrna-Clayton 3: Camden-Wyoming reached the District I finals with the victory on Saturday night.

C-W will host MOT on Sunday at 7 p.m. needing a win to force a second game for the district championship on Monday.

Brooks Szymanski (3 hits, 2 doubles) while Greyson Voshell had a two-run double for Camden-Wyoming. Jack Boulden, Easton Wilson, and Kappen Salsman also drove in runs.

Linken Kelley also had multiple hits for Camden-Wyoming, which finished with 12 hits in the contest.

MOT 1, Camden-Wyoming 0: MOT made it to the District I championship game with the one-run win on Friday.

The Middletown-area squad is slated to play again today at Camden-Wyoming at 7 p.m. against either C-W or Smyrna-Clayton.

In Friday’s victory, Liem Fitzgerald, Tucker Lloyd and Trevor Abbott combined to pitch a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and just one walk for MOT.

MOT scored the contest’s only run in the fourth inning. Abbott led off with a single, moved to second on Cole Brown’s second walk of the night and scored two batters later when Maddox Day lofted a ball to right field.

Camden-Wyoming is also hosting the state tournament in the age group, beginning on July 26.

State Tournament

Smyrna-Clayton 10, New Castle 5: The District I champions won the opener of the best-of-three Senior League state tournament on Saturday night.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday at 7 p.m. in Milford. If New Castle wins, a second game will follow.

The state champion advances to the Eastern Regional in Worcester, Mass.

Winning pitcher Lexie Dennis struck out 11 in Saturday’s victory. Also leading the way for Smyrna-Clayton were Faith Jimenez (2 hits), Jordan Fletcher (2 hits, 2B, 1 RBI), Hailey Ennis (2B, 1 RBI), Kylie Parromore (2 hits, 1 RBI), Hailey Pinson (2B), Izzy Mancini (2 hits, 1 RBI) and Kelsey Long (2 hits, 2 RBI).
