Local roundup: Caesar Rodney knocks off Salesianum; DSU men make it two in a row

Caesar Rodney High built an 11-point lead with two matches left before knocking off Salesianum, 35-34, in a non-conference wrestling match on Saturday afternoon.

A second-period pin from Cameron Cataldi (157 pounds) gave the Riders a 35-24 advantage.

CR’s Owen Dixon (175) lost to Sallies’ Beau Minner in the final match but only by major decision (15-1) as the Riders held on for the one-point win over the previously-unbeaten Sals (6-1).

CR (8-1) also got pins from Cole Moffett (113) and Cody Waski (150) as it overcame an 18-0 deficit to start the match.

Sussex Central 58, Smyrna 15: Ryder Robinson (215 pounds) posted a pin in just 10 seconds as the Golden Knights inmproved to 16-0 with the win on Friday.

Sussex Central also got back-to-back pins from Cody Layfield (157) and Jadyn Craig (165) in 55 and then 43 seconds. Gabe Cannon (175) added a first-period fall.

The Eagles, which led 9-3 early in the match, got pins from Tyree Heath (138) and Chijioke Eule (285).

Laurel 44, Lake Forest 27: Joseph Baynard (285) capped off the night with a 51-second pin as the Bulldofs took control of first place in the Henlopen South with the win.

Also winning by fall for Laurel were Kade Wootten (106), Ian Messick (113), Landen Messick (132) and Aiden Bell (150).

Lake Forest got three straight pins from Nurrideen Ahmad-Statts (157), Shawn Ferrell (165) and Brogan Thomas (175). Ferrell’s fall came in 30 seconds.

Cape Henlopen 66, St. Georges 6: The Vikings (13-4) picked up eight pins in the non-conference victory.

Winning by fall for Cape Henlopen were Cale Baker (113), Maxim Meadows (120), Holt Baker (126), Joshua Wright (138), Andrew Schaen (157), Luke Bender (165), Patrick Donahue (215) and Sean Costello (285).

Delmar 41, Woodbridge 36: A third-period pin from Anthony Ennis (285) gave the Wildcats the Henlopen South victory on Friday.

Jazmon Snead (120) picked up a 45-second fall for Delmar with Theodore Egolf (138), Makhi Stroebel (144) and Kane Johnson (175) also winning by pin.
Parker Short (113) had an 18-second pin for the Blue Raiders with other pins coming from Jason Perry (150), Terrance Felipa (157) and Luke Chisenhall (165).

Delmar 60, Seaford 36: Theodore Egolf (138) posted a 45-second pin for the Wildcats in the Henlopen South win on Wednesday.

Also winning by pin for Delmar were Ryan Goehner (132), Cody West (165), Kane Johnson (175) and Nathan Ennis (215).

The Blue Jays collected pins from Coleman Willey (150), Zachary Holmes (157) and Sa`muary Long (285).

Boys’ basketball

New Town, Md. 58, Dover 52: The Senators couldn’t hold onto an early eight-point lead before dropping the non-conference road game.

Jaheim Harrell had 22 points for Dover, including four three-pointers. Kendall Abrams added 13.

Milford 52, Delaware Military 46: The Buccaneers out-scored the Seahawks, 23-9, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

Indian River 63, Newark Charter 49: Brendon Bradford netted 16 points with Jamison Bender adding 14 for the Indians (10-4).

IR finished with 11 three-pointers, getting multiple threes from four different players.

Salesianum 68, Smyrna 46: The Sals started the contest on a 15-4 run before downing the Eagles.

Obinna Coleman scored 13 points with Ryan Jones adding 11 for Smyrna.

Hodgson 63, Sussex Tech 39: The Silver Eagles downed the Ravens in a non-conference contest.

Caravel 67, Woodbridge 41: The Buccaneers opened up a 40-15 halftime lead in the non-conference win.

The Blue Raiders got 19 points from Bruce Mosley.

Saint Mark’s 80, Delmarva Christian 42: The Spartans led 21-5 after the first quarter before downing the Royals.

Girls’ basketball

Polytech 48, Milford 20: The Panthers out-scored the Buccaneers, 19-9, in the third quarter before winning their fourth game in a row.

Senior Kallie Hopkins (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Sky Naranjo (15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks) both ad double-doubles for Polytech.

Delmarva Christian 62, Delmar 19: The Royals improved their record to 13-0 with the victory.

Ainsley Bell (17 points, 10 steals, 7 assists), Journey Handy (16 points, 6 steals) and Mia Elliot (11 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals) all led Delmarva Christian.

Caravel 75, Seaford 36: The Buccaneers led 24-10 after the first quarter before downing the Blue Jays.

Sophomore Amira Tingle tallied 26 points, with five three-pointers.

College basketball

MEN, Delaware State 64, Morgan State 62: Martaz Robinson hit the winning basket on a leaning 12-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to give the Hornets the win.

The dramatic victory gives the Hornets (2-4 MEAC, 3-16 overall) their first winning streak since the 2019-20 season. The Bears (4-2 MEAC, 11-10 overall) had won seven of their last eight games and were tied for first place in the MEAC entering the contest.

DelState led by as many as 11 points in the second half. Morgan State clawed back, and tied the game at 62-62 on a three-point basket by Isaiah Burke with 21 seconds left.

Robinson led the Hornets with 17 points. He has scored 98 points in the last six contests to raise his season average to 9.4 points per game.

Brandon Stone came off the bench to add 12 points.

WOMEN, Elon 63, Delaware 60: The Phoenix (1-8 CAA, 5-15 overall) knocked off the Blue Hens (3-4 CAA, 10-8 overall) to earn their first league win of the season.

Jewel Smalls (12), Klarke Sconiers (11) and Tara Cousins (10) all finished in double figures for Delaware. Elon had lost 13 games in a row.

Morgan State 59, Delaware State 36: Sophomore Breionna Dodson recorded a season-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Hornets (2-4 MEAC, 4-13 overall) in the MEAC loss on Saturday. The Bears are 5-0 MEAC, 12-6 overall.
