Local Roundup: Smyrna earns 9-2 win over Delmar in softball

Smyrna High erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in picking up a 9-2 win over Delmar in Henlopen Conference softball on Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats had just tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth on a two-run home run from Autumn Boothe.

Winning pitcher Payton Dixon allowed only two hits while striking out 16 for the Eagles (16-0), who have won 10 games in a row dating back to the 2019 season.

Smyrna’s 11-hit attack was paced by Meghan Shirey (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Dixon (2 RBI) and Gianna Ducca (3 hits).

Cape Henlopen 8, Indian River 6: Winning pitcher Marissa Frederick homered as the Vikings rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

Frederick (3-2) pitched a five-hitter with 17 strikcouts for Cape, which also scored five runs in the fourth. Taylor Husbands added a pair of doubles for the Vikings.

IR pitchers Kinsley Hall and Megan Daisey combined to strike out eight.

Woodbridge 5, Milford 4: Payton Keeler’s second hit of the game scored Kamryn Spence to give the Raiders the walk-off win.

After the Buccaneers scored three runs in the top of the seventh, Woodbridge answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Winning pitcher Emily Peterson struck out nine while Maria Maddox had two hits, including a triple.

Pitcher Khyliah Reynolds, who struck out five, and Lillie Harrison had two hits apiece for Milford.

Dover 23, Early College 0: Lexi Dowdy threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in the Senators’ shutout win.

Emma Crowe homered while Simica Bolden, Dowdy and Lea Martin all had triples for Dover, which had 28 hits in the contest.

Morgan Summers had the Hornets’ lone hit.

Baseball

Dover 9, Indian River 8: The Senators used a four-run sixth inning to rally from a 6-5 deficit in the win.

Sir Bauer homered and reached base three times with Brandon Yoder adding a pair of RBI. Cole Greene pitched the final two-plus innings to earn the victory.

River Vickers and Kyle Coffey scored two runs apiece for the Indians, who scored twice in the top of the seventh before falling short.

Smyrna 7, Delmar 6: Derek Davis singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Eagles’ the walk-off win.

Starting pitcher Mason Drummond struck out 10 in five innings while Dwayne Ratcliffe and Connor Strauss both contributed multiple hits to Smyrna’s total of 10.

The Wildcats rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. Jullian Burdett, Chase Collis and Aaron Rhodes all had multiple hits for Delmar.

A.I.DuPont 9, First State Military 6: The Bulldogs scored three runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead before the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Nicholas Casper had two hits and an RBI for First State.

Boys’ lacrosse

Gunston, Md. 5, Lake Forest 4: The Spartans dropped to 2-2 with the non-conference loss.

College baseball

Delaware State 8, Coppin State 6: The Hornets scored seven runs in the fifth to highlight its MEAC North victory.

Game two was suspended due to thunderstorms, and will be resumed as part of a doubleheader on Saturday.

DSU trailed 3-1 before the fifth-inning explosion. The Hornets sent 11 men to the plate and collected eight hits in the inning.

A two-run double by Cole Garey (Polytech) put DSU ahead for good. Mark Herron then added a two-run triple before Mike Worthington hit a two-run homer to give the Hornets an 8-3 lead.

Miquel Rivera (Polytech) had three of DSU’s 14 hits.

Marymount 21, Wesley 4: The Saints (9-2) scored three or more runs in five innings in rolling to the win.

Brendon Holder and Jacob Meisel both had a hit and an RBI for the Wolverines (2-9) as 10 different Wesley players had a hit.

College lacrosse

Two UD players honored: Delaware’s Owen Grant and Mike Robinson have both received Inside Lacrosse Midseason All-American recognition.

Grant was named to the second team, while Robinson earned honorable mention recognition.

Grant not only leads his team and the Colonial Athletic Association in caused turnovers (21), but also ranks first in Division I in caused turnovers per game (3.50).

Robinson ranks first in the conference and is tied for first in the nation in goals (33). The sophomore is first on the team and second in the league in points (38).

He has recorded a hat trick in all seven games he played in this season and has scored in each of his 13 career outings.
