Letter to the Editor: We survived Christmas … some did not

Posted

Most of us have survived the hectic, hurry-scurry holiday season, with gifts wrapped and delivered, our wallets still intact.

But some did not.

I am referring to our homeless communities — people, many of whom neither gave nor received a gift. Many went hungry, many without shelter.

I have written many letters about central Delaware’s premier homeless shelter, one of the best in the nation, Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIMH). I have been a resident, a volunteer and a part-time staff member at DIMH. My title is “special advisor,” and a couple of days ago my “special advice” was for the men to share the sweet treats — candies and cookies — which I took over there.

Now is a time to make the very good even better. You may have seen the ads in the newspaper about DIMH moving to a new location. They are all set on that account and have volunteers. They have such a great track record that score, with organizations and individuals pitching in with labor, goods and some money. They should be in their new home on Division Street in the summer.

However, they need more of that green stuff and even more volunteers! Here is a fact: Every investment in DIMH is returned to the community tenfold! Tenfold! Jeanine Kleimo, the board chair, has the numbers. As homeless men and women transition to productive, tax paying citizens with all the help from DIMH, we all benefit.

So I ask you to extend the spirit of Christmas a little longer; open your hearts and your wallets to do what you can in supporting DIMH. You can contact DIMH at 302-736-3600.
