Lawmakers recognize Black Maternal Health Week in Delaware

Posted

DOVER—Both houses of Delaware’s General Assembly passed a resolution to recognize April 11 through 17 as Black Maternal Health Awareness Week in the state.

While Delaware’s infant mortality rate is 6.5 deaths per 1,000 live births, the infant mortality rate for Black infants is 11.6, three times higher than the White infant mortality rate of 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births.

The legislation’s clauses acknowledge the work the state has done to “reduce maternal and infant mortality, morbidity, and disparities; and improve public and professional awareness of the issues related to improving maternal health outcomes, women’s experiences at childbirth, and critical postpartum care, especially for women of color.”

Sponsored by Sen. Marie Pinkney, D-Bear, and Rep. Melissa Minor-Brown, D-New Castle, Senate Concurrent Resolution 30 garnered co-sponsorship from several lawmakers, including the entirety of the Senate chamber.
