MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The Wesley College football program has plenty of victories in its history.

But it has no more than a couple — if any — in front of it.

So it was difficult not to miss the historical context as the Wolverines held off NJAC rival Montclair State, 20-13, on Saturday afternoon at Sprague Field in what could be Wesley’s final football win ever.

The Wolverines (1-1) are slated to play their last game next Sunday at Christopher Newport, although there is the possibility of adding one more contest the following week.

“Like I told our guys, any time you win a college football game, there’s reason to celebrate,” said Wesley coach Chip Knapp. “It wasn’t a perfect game, but our guys played hard.”

On Saturday, Wesley jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead but then needed a 19-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brady Walters in the third quarter to provide the winning points.

On a passing play, the sophomore QB rolled to his left, pump-faked a defender into the air and took off down the sidelines. He was met by some Montclair players at the goal line but pushed his way in for the TD to give the Wolverines a 20-6 lead.

“It was a broken play,” said Knapp. “Brady turned a negative into a positive, and that’s what we need. That’s what kind of player he is — he’s just real scrappy.”

The Red Hawks (1-1) closed within 20-13 on a nine-yard TD run with 10:34 left.

But Wesley’s defense blanked Montclair on its final three possessions. That included one drive that started at the Wolverines’ 26 after a fumble.

The Red Wolves ended up missing a 48-yard field goal attempt on that possession.

“There were some new players out there and they were under pressure,” said Knapp. “At the end of the game, they had to get some stops. We were able to do that. ... It was a great learning experience, especially for the younger guys who got to play.”

Wesley took a first-quarter lead when Akil Woods’ two-yard TD run capped off a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive.

Then, with the Red Hawks driving on their ensuing possession, Wolverines linebacker Mike Brewer (Woodbridge) returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown that gave Wesley a sudden 14-0 advantage. Brewer also had a team-high eight tackles.

Latrell McCants ran for a game-high 79 yards on 16 carries for the Wolverines with Xavier Drummond (Sussex Tech) adding 52 yards on nine carries. Walters completed 15-of-26 passes for 167 yards, including five catches by Jerrish Halsey for 52 yards.

It was a long day for the Wolverines, who used to stay overnight before games at Montclair. This time, though, they took the three-hour plus busride up on Saturday morning.

“Winning cures a lot — it’s always good to win,” said Knapp. “So we’re happy.”
