Lakey: Inspector general should be from minority party

Posted

If the state is serious about appointing an inspector general, I would suggest that, since there is no such thing as a nonpartisan, unbiased person, the inspector general should be a member of the minority political party, appointed for the duration of the time the majority party stays in power. If not, then $600,000 will be wasted to further the interests of the majority party.

If the appointed person resigns, then a new appointee would be chosen. If the opposing party should become the majority (unlikely in Delaware), then the current IG would be replaced with an appointee from the new minority party.

This would not be a permanent employment position, with never-ending state benefits. Independents should not be considered, as they tend to side with the majority party.
