Kent County continuing response to network intrusion

Posted

DOVER — Kent County is continuing to work in response to the July 8 network intrusion, the county said in a release Tuesday night.

Services like 911 dispatch and wastewater treatment continue to operate despite the incident, though routine operations were disrupted by ongoing work to repair and restore local servers and networks when the county opened for business Monday morning.

"What we’re dealing with are disruptions to local systems like our phone system and software for functions like recording deeds and assessing taxes,” said Finance Director Susan Durham.

“While this may come as a disappointment, we will still be collecting taxes,” she added.

Ms. Durham said that electronic payments for county services are handled by a third-party vendor so resident financial data is not at risk.

“I’m old enough to remember when government ran on typewriters and forms in triplicate,” County Administrator Ken Decker said. “We will do everything we can manually, and we’ll have to catch up on data entry when our systems are fully operational.”

County IT Director Joe Simmons is leading the response and recovery efforts.

When asked about a timeline for full restoration of services, Mr. Simmons did not provide a timeline, stating, “We’re making steady progress.”

There are no further details of the event as law enforcement continues their investigation.
