RESPONSES TO QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Is Delaware’s history well known?

Posted

Dec. 7 is Delaware Day. Do you think First State residents know the importance of the date? Are our children learning enough about Delaware history in school? What would you want them to know?

  • Delaware ratified the Constitution on Dec. 7. I hang the flag in my classroom, so my students are familiar with the date. — Nicholas Joseph
  • You hang the flag, but do you talk about it? Have a conversation about it? That would be the fun thing to do — even if you are not a history teacher or social studies teacher. Just have a short conversation about the importance of the date. — Sandy Johnson
  • I am continuously amazed at how little the people of Delaware know about our history, and Dover does nothing to promote it. On a side note, why isn’t Dec. 7 recognized as a state holiday? — Ellen Hart Richardson
  • Yes, every student should be taught their state’s history. We had to do a state report in the fourth grade. Dec. 7, 1787, is the day that Delaware was the first state to ratify the federal Constitution. — June Barnett
  • As a relatively long-term resident (I moved to the state in 1999) and having gone through the Delaware education system relatively recently, no, kids are not being taught what it means in school. Most schools are not teaching any kind of history, let alone Delaware history, unless you take a field trip to one of the few historical places we have here in this state. If they do learn history, they also learn that Dec. 7 was overshadowed by another event that took place that same day, otherwise known as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. — Kyle Hendrix
  • My husband and I know the history of Delaware and try to pass it on to our grandchildren. Delaware history should be taught in our schools, along with the history of our country. This is sadly lacking in today’s schools. — Sandy Johnson
  • Exactly what schools need: another thing they have to teach. — Benjamin Black
  • When I was young, we were taught Delaware history in school. We spent time in Old New Castle. Unfortunately, my children did not, and my grandchildren did not. — Robin Reilly
