SMYRNA — Remains of a person believed to be less than 10 years old were discovered near Little Lass softball fields late Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Smyrna Police received a report at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday and investigated the scene next to Duck Creek Parkway, spokesman Cpl. Brian M. Donner said in a news release announcing the discovery.

The remains were later confirmed to be human and police announced the apparent age on Saturday.

Detectives are working with the Delaware Attorney General’s Office, Chief Medical Examiner and Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate.

The investigation was in a preliminary stage Saturday and police said more details would be released when or if available.

Cpl. Donner said some information on the investigation would “be withheld to preserve the integrity of the case.”

Police asked anyone with information to possibly assist the case to call Det./Sgt. Brien Street at 653-9217.
