TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Michael Salgado-Medina kicked a 37-yard field goal with 39 seconds left after No. 24 Arizona recovered an onside pooch kick and the Wildcats pulled out an improbable 29-28 victory over TCU. The Wildcats pulled to 28-26 on Noah Fifita’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Craig with 1:45 left, but their 2-point attempt failed. Arizona lined up for an onside kick, and Ian French floated the ball over the Horned Frogs’ front line. TCU’s Ed Small couldn’t come up with an over-the-shoulder catch on the kick and Arizona’s Zuri Watson recovered at the Horned Frogs’ 26. Salgado-Medina made his field goal four plays later and Tyrese Boss sealed it with an interception, keeping alive the Wildcats’ Big 12 championship hopes.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Playing in the same conference again has put No. 7 BYU and No. 3 Utah back on equal footing in football. When the Utes host the Cougars on Saturday, the game will be a major factor in determining who will play for the Big 12 Championship in December — and whether more than one team from the league will claim a College Football Playoff bid. The Holy War rivalry took a hit when the Utes joined the Pac-12 in 2011. Utah gained a distinct advantage in recruiting, TV money, and resources over the Cougars, but joining the Big 12 in 2023 helped BYU close the gap.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 17 points in 18 minutes and led No. 17 Kansas to an 89-45 rout of Middle Tennessee on Friday night. Kaufman-Renn, a fifth-year senior who transferred from Purdue, shot 7 for 8 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. Through two games with Kansas (2-0), he is 11 for 13 from the field. Fifth-year center Christian Reeves added 10 points for Kansas. Eli Rice led Middle Tennessee with 11 points.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Tre Singleton scored 19 of his career-high 28 points in the first half to lead No. 18 Iowa State past Southern Mississippi 83-57. The Cyclones have won nine straight home openers and 25 of their last 26. Iowa State dominated inside in the first half, outscoring the Golden Eagles 26-6 in the paint while jumping out to a 46-29 halftime lead. The Cyclones took a double-digit lead late in the first half on Dominykas Pleta’s fast-break dunk and they were up by 29 in the middle of the first half. Anthony Igiede scored 13 points to lead Southern Miss.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Rob Wright III scored 19 points and Tyler Betsey added 18 on six 3-pointers to lead No. 25 BYU to a 108-67 victory over Omaha. Colin Chandler had 18 points and five assists for the Cougars in a wire-to-wire win. Bruce Branch III provided 17 points and six rebounds, and Jaxon Kohler finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Six players scored in double figures for BYU, which dominated around the rim and in transition. The Cougars outscored Omaha 31-0 in fast-break points and had a 46-24 advantage in the paint. Deke Thompson led the Mavericks with 17 points and Cahmai Crosby added 11. Omaha allowed 22 second-chance points and 19 points off 12 turnovers.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Pat Tillman's legacy keeps pushing forward on his 50th birthday. The ideals the former NFL player lived by still inspire millions of people in the 22 years since he was killed while serving as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. It carries on in the places that bear his name and the people who view his life as a call to action. There are schools and streets that bear his name. Two statues have been erected of Tillman, at the Arizona Cardinals and Arizona State football stadiums. The Pat Tillman Foundation pushes ahead his legacy with the Tillman Scholars, who have gone on to become doctors, educators, even a NASA astronaut.

UNDATED (AP) — A proposal to extend the men’s college soccer season to a two-semester calendar has been rejected by a vote of Division I schools. The proposal was approved by the NCAA Division I Cabinet in early October. Schools had 30 days to consider the decision, which would have marked a major shift in the college game. Soccer is a fall sport, with the College Cup championship played in December. The proposed change would have reduced the number of midweek matches, with proponents saying more recovery time between games would benefit players’ health and safety. Critics said the change would put stress on school personnel.

DENVER (AP) — Federal judges handed the NCAA a significant victory in its struggle to implement a new five-year eligibility ruling, though the win does nothing to tamp down dozens of similar lawsuits playing out in state courts across the country. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver reversed a lower-court decision that had granted players across the country who graduated high school in 2022 a fifth year of eligibility. That lower-court ruling had against the NCAA’s new rule that granted five years of eligibility to athletes starting in the next year’s class, though many of those players still found their way onto rosters thanks to favorable rulings in state courts.
