Henlopen swimmers reach DIAA state finals

NEWARK — Sussex Academy’s Gracie Maughan and Anna Mumford both reached the DIAA finals in three events in the girls’ state swim meet preliminaries on Thursday night.

The finals are being held today at University of Delaware’s Carpenter Center pool. The boys’ meet begins at 11 a.m. with the girls’ meet at 6 p.m.

Maughan qualified first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.54) and sixth in the 200-yard IM (2:11.49). Mumford took second in both the 200-yard freestyle ( 1:55.27) and 500-yard freestyle (5:08.24).

The two also swam legs of the Seahawks’ .200-yard medley relay ( 1:55.87), which qualified eighth. They were joined by Victoria Evans and Addison McKay.

Cape Henlopen also had a pair of relay teams make the finals: Sidney Caldwell, Jenna Reinhold, Isla Touw and Anna Sullivan took seventh in both the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.47) and .400-yard freestyle relay ( 3:48.01).

Several Henlopen Conference swimmers reached the finals in the boys’ preliminaries on Wednesday.

Individually, Lake Forest’s Kyle Parham placed fourth in 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.82).In the 500-yard freestyle Polytech’s Jacob Madden was fifth (4:58.04) while Sussex Tech’s Coleman Woodard was eighth (5:02.96); .

Cape Henlopen’s Shane Toback qualified seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (55.49) and eighth in the .100-yard butterfly (54.45).

Toback also helped the Vikings reach the finals with Kevin Lewandowski, Brian Fleming and Holden Tighe, in the 400-yard freestyle (third, 3:17.38) and 200-yard medley relay (fourth, 1:39.18).

Also for the Vikings, Tighe, Ellis Jack, Fleming and Lewandowski qualified fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:29.13).
