Harrington Public Library to host groundbreaking

Posted

HARRINGTON — The Harrington Public Library will be breaking ground for its 101 Little Mastens Corner Road location at 10 a.m. June 14.

The event will take place rain or shine.

The Harrington library is the only one in the state that has not been remodeled or rebuilt. Its leaders have made multiple attempts over the last few decades to construct a better library for the Lake Forest School District community. Now, due to aid from the American Rescue Plan Act and the state’s bond bill, an updated library is a reality.

It will feature multiple meeting rooms, a makerspace area and an expanded collection for all ages.

The design has been done by the Becker Morgan Group, and EDiS is the construction manager. The building will take a little over a year to complete, with an opening goal of September 2024.

“The Harrington community has participated in fundraising for a new library for generations. ... With the location near both Lake Forest South Elementary, W.T. Chipman Middle School and the Harrington Little Spartans (Early) Learning Center, our students can take advantage of state-of-the-art library resources,” said Billie Humphrey, president of the Friends of the Harrington Public Library.

“The Lake Forest community will know the library as more than a building storing books,” she continued. “It is a place where the future Lake Forest community comes together. ... I am proud to be the president of the Friends of the Harrington Public Library at this time, and I thank all the previous members who have worked so hard toward this goal.”

The groundbreaking is open to the public. To RSVP, call 302-398-4647 or email harrington.library@lib.de.us.
