CRISFIELD — Charles A. McClenahan, a former member of the House of Delegates and ex-Crisfield Mayor died Thursday evening, May 11. He was 76. He had retired two years ago as chief executive officer of Landmark Insurance & Financial Group.

“Charlie Mac” was a Wilmington, N.C., native who spent his formative years in Crisfield and was with the project director for the Somerset County Community Action Agency for 10 years. Three years later in 1979 he acquired 90 percent ownership in what was the Robert J. Wilson Insurance Agency in Crisfield, adding to it the former Ward & Briddell Agency in 1983 and in April 1989 renaming it Landmark and eventually relocating the business to Princess Anne.

He was mayor from 1978-1982 and was a Republican in the House of Delegates, from 1992 through 2003, serving as vice chair of the Eastern Shore delegation from 1998-2003. His community service included founding, leading or participating in several organizations and events including the Crisfield Jaycees, Lower Shore Sheltered Workshop, J. Millard Tawes Foundation, United Way, Salisbury State University Foundation, Tangier Sound Music Festival and Somers Cove Yacht Club. He was chairman of the National Hard Crab Derby and the annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake.

A past president and former active member of the Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the organization honored him at its 2015 annual banquet.

His immediate family includes his wife, the former Annette Tawes, and children Ryan and Heather. Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.
