Former Delaware auditor Kathy McGuiness files for Rehoboth-area House seat

Posted

REHOBOTH — Former State Auditor Kathy McGuiness has officially filed a campaign committee for the 14th District seat in Delaware’s House of Representatives, according to the state’s campaign finance reporting website.

Ms. McGuiness was elected Delaware’s auditor of accounts in 2018, serving in the post until her resignation in October 2022 following convictions of misdemeanor official misconduct and conflict of interest related to the hiring of her daughter within the office.

The Delaware Supreme Court invalidated the official misconduct charge in February but upheld the conflict of interest charge.

The charges against Ms. McGuiness and ensuing legal battle marked the first time in Delaware’s history that a sitting, statewide elected official was convicted of criminal charges while in office.

According to the Delaware Campaign Finance Reporting System, Ms. McGuiness organized her campaign committee  Monday and established the committee Thursday.

Attempts to reach Ms. McGuiness for comment on her candidacy were unsuccessful Thursday.

Should the former auditor run for the seat in the General Assembly, she would enter into a crowded primary election for the Democratic nomination.

Marty Rendon, commissioner of the Delaware Human and Civil Rights Commission, announced his candidacy for the seat last August, while Claire Snyder-Hall, former executive director of the pro-democracy group Common Cause Delaware, announced her bid for the office Jan. 31.

No Republican candidates have filed a campaign with the state as of Thursday.

The race for the 14th District seat in Delaware’s General Assembly will determine the successor of Rep. Pete Schwartzkopf, D-Rehoboth Beach. The former House speaker has served in the chamber since 2002, becoming speaker in 2013 before announcing his intent to retire on the final day of the 2023 legislative session last June.

The 14th Representative District encompasses Rehoboth Beach and parts of Lewes and Dewey Beach.

Delaware's primary election will be held on Sept. 10, with the general election set for Nov. 5.
