Amid timing concerns, Dagsboro amending trash pickup ordinance

Posted

DAGSBORO — There was some trash talk from Prince Georges Acres residents at the Town Council meeting Monday.

After hearing complaints about 4 a.m. trash pickup in the development, Councilman Jason Russell suggested that members have a “discussion on this, if it is impacting our residents.”

After some deliberation, council decided to amend Dagsboro’s solid-waste ordinance, to prohibit visits by trash companies between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. The regulation will be updated by town solicitor Greg Morris.

The times are similar to those in Ocean View, Selbyville and Millsboro, town administrator Cindi Brought said.

It was noted by Mr. Morris that one trash hauler, Blue Hen Dispose-All, has an early 3 p.m. transfer station deadline, while other stations are open later.

Councilman Brian Baull agreed: “There are other companies that do it and don’t have an issue.”

Further, Mayor William Chandler III suggested that a punitive provision be built into the ordinance.

“Hopefully, we won’t have to use it,” he said. “Maybe if we just threaten it, we’ll get compliance.”

The amended ordinance is expected to be ready for Town Council’s consideration at its March meeting.
