Student suspect removed without incident

LEWES — Cape Henlopen High School officials said a firearm was found in an unidentified student's backpack during classes Wednesday.

The individual was reportedly removed from the school by Delaware State Police without incident.

"Earlier this afternoon Cape Henlopen High School Administrators, (its) constable and School Resource Officer were alerted to a student possibly in possession of a firearm at Cape Henlopen High School," noted a statement by Jenny Nauman, assistant superintendent of the Cape Henlopen School District.

She then confirmed a successful investigation and recovery of the weapon.

"After further investigation by the DSP School Resource Officer and a search of the student's possessions, a gun was found in their backpack. Delaware State Police immediately removed the student from the building without incident," the statement continued.

No other information about the type of weapon, any ammunition found or a motive behind the incident had been reported Wednesday afternoon.

Ms. Nauman said there was no interruption of the students' schedules and that classes continued.  However, the district canceled all activities set for Wednesday night.
