Early April opening planned for Millsboro police station

MILLSBORO — Barring a major setback, the Millsboro Police Department expects to be operating from its new state-of-the-art facility early next month.

April 8 is the target date, but it’s not etched in stone, Chief Brian Calloway said, adding that the agency hopes to hold a ribbon cutting March 27, plus tours of the 14,000-square-foot complex.

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., whose office secured $550,000 in congressional funding for the building’s community room, is expected to attend the ceremony.

Ground was broken for the $7.4 million headquarters in early October 2022. Officials hoped the department would have been able to move from its 307 Main St. base earlier in 2024.

“We’d love to get in the building (now), but we don’t want to rush it where it is not done,” said town manager Jamie Burk at the Monday Town Council meeting.

Delmarva Veteran Builders, the project’s general contractor, is working on final tasks. One delay was bulletproof glass, which recently arrived and is expected to be installed this week, Chief Calloway said.

Stormwater drainage is another concern.

“There are several small issues that we have to address,” the chief continued. “Jamie Burk and I have been working at (ensuring) that our builder is getting these issues addressed in a timely fashion.”

The new hub includes a training facility, a sally port, a fitness area, lockers that can accommodate up to 30 employees, larger spaces for detectives and administration, a break room and several interview locations.

The need for a larger station evolved as the force, presently at 17 sworn officers, outgrew its Main Street location, which has served the agency for about a quarter-century. The 120 Railroad Ave. site is more centrally located, providing quicker access to U.S. 113, the dual highway that divides the east and west sides of Millsboro.

Chief Calloway hopes there are no more delays.

“I think Jamie and I are both on the same page here. We want to make sure that we have a product our community is proud of, the council is proud (of), and we all can enjoy this building,” he said. “So, we want to make sure we get it right. So, if that date has to be pushed back to get it right, (then it will be). We want to be proud of this building.”
