DUI charge results from Millsboro traffic stop

Posted

MILLSBORO — A 23-year-old Georgetown man was charged with DUI and resisting arrest following a traffic stop Sunday, Delaware State Police spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Authorities said that, at approximately 12:12 a.m., a trooper on patrol saw a 2012 black Volkswagen Jetta speeding on eastbound Mount Joy Road, near Oak Street. The officer also saw the Jetta swerve off the road and into the grass, after it turned onto southbound Hollyville Road, Cpl. DeMalto said.

The trooper stopped the car and contacted the sole occupant, identified as Miguel Santos-Chavez. The smell of alcohol was detected from the driver’s breath, as well as signs of impairment, police said.

Mr. Santos-Chavez fled on foot before being taken into custody a short time later, Cpl. DeMalto said, and gave the trooper a false name and birthday.

Charges included resisting arrest with force or violence, criminal impersonation, criminal mischief, DUI of alcohol and traffic offenses. Mr. Santos-Chavez was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on $3,100 cash bond.
