WIMBLEDON — Once again, Madison Brengle was on the edge of losing on Tuesday.

And once again, the Dover native found a way to survive.

Trailing by a game, Brengle won the final three games to pull out a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory over Christina McHale in the first round of the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon.

The match was suspended on Monday because of darkness with Brengle leading 7-6 in the decisive third set. When the match resumed on Tuesday, McHale took the first two games to go up 8-7.

McHale, who is ranked 97th in the world, was then serving for the victory but Brengle won all four points to tie the match at 8-8.

The next game took 10 points to decide. After four ties, Brengle won the final two points to go up 9-8.

Brengle then broke McHale’s serve for the sixth time in the final game to take the match.

It was the fourth straight time that Brengle has advanced past the first round at Wimbledon. Ranked No. 82, Brengle next faces fourth-seeded Sofia Kenin, a Russian native who now lives in Florida.

Kenin won the Australian Open last year but hasn’t made it past the opening round at Wimbledon.

McHale committed 76 unforced errors in the match compared to 26 for Brengle. But McHale hit 57 winners to Brnegle’s 17.
