Dover woman charged with assaulting police officer

DOVER - A 21-year-old Dover woman was arrested Tuesday after she allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer during a traffic stop, authorities said.

Dover Police said the incident began when a patrol officer saw Tailah Smith commit traffic violations while driving a vehicle in the area of South Governors Avenue and West Loockerman Street at approximately 7:55 p.m.

Police said the officer conducted a traffic stop and Mr. Smith immediately exited her vehicle and became confrontational with the officer. Police said the officer attempted to detain Ms. Smith, who punched him in the face and upper body. After a struggle with several officers, Ms. Smith was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

The officer punched by Ms. Smith sustained a minor injury to his lip and his left hand and refused medical treatment, police said. His watch was also broken during the struggle with Ms. Smith.

Ms. Smith was charged with second-degree assault: injures a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with force (four counts), resisting arrest (three counts), criminal mischief under $1,000, disorderly conduct, failure to signal within 300 feet of turning and failure to stop at a stop sign. She was released on $9,702 unsecured bond.
