Dover PD kicking off Holiday Heroes

Donations requested for shopping project that pairs officers with kids

DOVER — The ninth annual Holiday Heroes program, hosted by the Dover Police Department, is raising funds from the community to assist needy families.

Holiday Heroes allows children from the Dover area to pair up with a Dover officer to shop for Christmas gifts at Target. The event not only provides necessities to families, such as warm winter clothing, but also gifts for Christmas and the opportunity for a child to connect with an officer.

Donations of cash, checks or Target gift cards can be dropped off or mailed to Dover Police Department, Attn: Sgt. Mark Hoffman, 400 S. Queen St., Dover, DE 19904. Checks must be made out to “Dover Police Holiday Heroes.”

Donations of Target gift cards can also be made by email, by purchasing an online card at target.com and sending it to contact@doverpolice.org.

There is no online or crowdsourcing fundraising campaign for this program.

All check donations must be received by Dec. 1. Gift card and cash donations must be received by Dec. 7.

DPD does not take signups or nominations from the public. To identify children most in need and ensure that the selection process is fair, the agency partners with local school districts. School employees will submit families for the program, and they are then contacted by officers based on the amount of money raised. Do not call the police department or your child’s school asking to be nominated.

No donations other than checks, cash and Target gift cards will be taken.

While the shopping event does occur during regular store hours, DPD does not announce it in advance. No volunteers from outside the department will be necessary.

DPD said that, in its highest fundraising years, the program has assisted more than 100 local children.

Corporate donations will be accepted, and an emailed receipt for donations is available upon request. Photo opportunities and social media mentions for participating businesses are available, as well.
