Dover juvenile charged with weapons offenses
By DOVER — A 12-year-old Dover boy was charged with weapons offenses following a foot pursuit Friday, authorities said.
Dover police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said officers saw the juvenile walking downtown with James Ayers, 21, of Dover, at approximately 6:42 p.m. The youth was known to be wanted by juvenile probation units, he added.
Officers attempted to take him into custody at South Bradford and Division streets, but the juvenile and Mr. Ayers ran away, Cpl. Schmid said.
The boy was taken into custody after the foot chase and after removing a firearm from his waistband, police said. Mr. Ayers was not apprehended at the time but was observed shortly afterward in a vehicle.
Officers stopped the vehicle, and Mr. Ayers once again fled on foot; however, he was taken into custody a short time later, Cpl. Schmid said.
The juvenile was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Stevenson House Detention Center, Milford, on $21,000 secured bond.
Mr. Ayers was charged with two counts of resisting arrest and released on his own recognizance.
