Biggs Spanish Language Family Programming

Biggs Museum of American has free admission for all, plus Spanish Language Family Programming and Art Making (drop-in from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pape Demba Samb drumming concert

Dover Public Library presents the In Harmony Concert Series: Pape Demba “Paco” Samb. at 2 p.m. This master hand drummer and internationally known musician is a griot whose family have been the keepers of the ancestral history, stories and music for hundreds of years. He performs both traditional and contemporary music across the mid-Atlantic. Free.

This program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Just Mercy” film showing

Dover Public Library hosts the free Tuesday Movie Series at 1:30 p.m. “Just Mercy” stars Michael P. Jordan and Jamie Foxx in critically acclaimed story of civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson working to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.

Thursday

Creative Camp for Teens: Creating Diverse Stories

Dover Public Library hosts a 4 p.m. Creative Camp workshop on the importance of diverse stories, specifically black literature and art, and how to create diverse art. This free program is open to teens and tweens.

Friday and Feb. 17 and 24

Biggs free admission day

Biggs Museum of American Art has free admission for all, plus a 12:30 p.m. guided tour highlighting African American artists. Part of Citywide Black History Month.

Saturday

“The Letter of the Law”

The Old State House on The Green in Dover hosts “The Letter of the Law” program at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

As the lead historic site interpreter at the New Castle Court House Museum, Juliette Wurm will explore the bias and racism written in the laws of Delaware, from the American Revolution to Reconstruction, to explore the inequities written into these laws and how they were enforced. Free.

"Celebrating and Engaging Black Youth through the Churches’

The Inner City Cultural League at Sankofa Cultural Arts Center hosts a special program “Celebrating and Engaging Black Youth through the Churches” at 2 p.m., featuring the the Rev. Dr. John G. Moore Sr.; Sankofa Drummers, Dancers and String Orchestra; histories of the African American religious movement; liturgical dancing and youth groups; and more. Free.

Feb. 14

Louis Armstrong film showing

Dover Public Library hosts the free Tuesday Movie Series at 1:30 p.m. “Satchmo Masters of American Music: Louis Armstrong” is a documentary about one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

Feb. 16

Creative Camp for Teens: Writer’s Workshop

Dover Public Library hosts a 4 p.m. Creative Camp on the various resources for aspiring minority creatives. This free program is for teens and tweens.

Family Night: Civil Rights Movements with Hip Hop Fundamentals

Dover Public Library hosts Hip Hop Fundamentals at 5 p.m. Using dance,”Civil Rights Movements” is an hour-long assembly focusing on student involvement in the American Civil Rights Movement, as seen through the eyes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dance, audience participation and a variety of media will explore the social conditions that gave rise to the movement; the work necessary to end segregation; and the critical role that young people played in winning equal rights. Appropriate for ages 5 and up. Parents must stay with children at all times.

“Our Story in Space” STEM day

Inner City Cultural League hosts “Our Story in Space” family-friendly hands-on fun with coding, engineering, communications, cyber escape rooms, hazard/safe houses, space fitness, displays, trivia, prizes and more. 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sankofa Cultural Arts Center.

“An Uphill Battle, The Unfulfilled Promise of the Civil War 1860-1896”

The Old State House on The Green in Dover hosts “An Uphill Battle, The Unfulfilled Promise of the Civil War 1860-1896” program at 1 p.m. After the war, great change seemed promised with the first federal civil rights acts and amendments. Why did we instead descend into segregation? The program explores the constitutional amendments, the first federal civil rights acts, Delaware’s political climate and reactions to federal legislation and end at the Plessy decision.

Dover Public Library hosts the free Tuesday Movie Series at 1:30 p.m. “Black Panther” is the Marvel superhero movie with an all-star cast about the hidden, but advanced kingdom of Wakanda stepping into the future, but confronting a challenge from the past.

Lecture: Brown vs. Board of Education

Dover Public Library hosts Delaware historian Syl Woolford at 6 p.m. to discuss Delaware’s role in the lawsuits leading to Brown v. Board and integration. Black students and white students were separated by race, which caused unequal learning. The NAACP Defense Fund, under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, challenged the Plessy v. Ferguson decision and in 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that segregated education was unconstitutional.

Feb. 23

Creative Camp for Teens: Film Analysis

Dover Public Library invites teens to embrace your inner film critic at 4 p.m. Teens will get the opportunity to watch short films from award winning, black independent artists of Delaware and use media literacy to develop their own film critical analysis.

Feb. 25

‘The Evolution of Black Recorded Music: “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Soul”’

The Old State House on The Green in Dover hosts at 1 p.m. this program highlighting the establishment of the Soul And Rock ‘N’ Roll genres; artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown and Sister Rosetta Tharpe; and how the Detroit-based Motown created the foundations of R&B. Includes biographies, musical recordings and video clips from the 1940s-60s.

Feb. 28

“The Woman King”film showing

Dover Public Library hosts the free Tuesday Movie Series at 1:30 p.m. “The Woman King” stars Viola Davis in a historical epic inspired by true events in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.
