DOVER — A 36-year-old Dover man died after falling off his bicycle and being struck by a vehicle in the middle of South DuPont Highway on Tuesday, authorities said.

According to Dover police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid, Mauricio Correa was struck by a 2013 Toyota Camry that failed to stop at a red light at the intersection with Webbs Lane. The motorist, a 22-year-old Maryland man, swerved in an attempt to avoid the bicyclist but could not stop in time, police said.

Officers were called to the incident at approximately 6:45 p.m. and found Mr. Correa in the road. They attempted to render aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Cpl. Schmid said.

After the collision, the Camry pulled to the left side of the highway, where a second Dover man, 37, was standing on his bike in the median. The vehicle struck its rear tire, ejecting the man, police said.

That man was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation continues, and Dover police asked anyone with information to call 302-736-7130.
