Salisbury teen killed

On July 5, shortly after midnight, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to Chippewa Boulevard in the area of Kiowa Avenue in Salisbury for a reported shooting.

During the investigation, it was determined that seven individuals were shot during a block party at this location.

One of the victims in this incident, a 14-year-old male from Salisbury, Xavier Maddox, succumbed to his gunshot wounds after being transported to Tidal Health. The other six individuals were all being treated at Tidal Health and it is believed none of the others suffered life-threatening wounds.

“This is a very active investigation, and we are asking anyone with information about this incident to please contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 410-548-4898,” a statement from Salisbury police said. “Anyone with information can also contact Crime Solvers at 410-548-1776 where you can share the information anonymously.”

Cambridge arson

An investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal has led to the arrest of a 37-year-old Cambridge woman. Cambridge Rescue Fire Company was alerted to a residential structure fire at 800 Slacum St. on July 1, at 6:54 p.m.

Firefighters arrived to find a one story, wood frame single family dwelling with a small fire inside. It took 25 firefighters 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. 

Rescue Fire Company requested the Office of the State Fire Marshal to respond to conduct an origin and cause investigation. The investigating deputy state fire marshal determined the fire originated in a hallway closet and was the result of arson.

Smoke alarms were present in the home and activated, however the home was not equipped with a fire sprinkler system. The home was owned by Mary Barnes. Damage to the home and its contents as a result of the fire is estimated to be $90,000.

Crystal Barnes, 37, was arrested and taken before a Dorchester County Court Commissioner where she was held with no bond. She was charged with 1st and 2nd Degree Arson. The Cambridge Police Department assisted.

Shots fired

On July 5, at approximately 1:11 a.m., Cambridge Police Department (CPD) Officers responded to the area of Peachblossom Avenue and Robbins Street for two Shot Spotter alerts. The first was for approximately 14 rounds and the second alert was for three rounds.

Officers were unable to locate any victims or witnesses or damaged property, though they found multiple spent shell casings and live .223 caliber ammunition. This is an on-going investigation.

Disorderly conduct/assault

On July 5 at approximately 6:33 p.m., CPD officers responded to Food Lion for a report of a fight in progress. CPD also received a holdup alarm at the same time.

Upon arrival, officers contacted one subject involved and stopped a vehicle in the Ace Hardware parking lot.

Investigation of statements from the subjects involved and video from the grocery showed that the incident occurred at the self-checkout.

Two women from Trappe were observed at the self-checkout when a Cambridge woman entered the store. A verbal altercation occurred.

A 41-year-old Trappe woman hit the Cambridge woman, and a fight started, involving the other Trappe woman.

Customers and employees tried to intervene, all of which created a disturbance in the store. The subjects were:

  • Janetta Lynn Milligan (37 years old of Cambridge)
  • Latoya Iantha Cornish (41 years old of Trappe)
  • Taylan Morita Wilson (21 years old of Trappe)

All three subjects were issued Criminal Citations and released on their signatures and referred to the District Court Commissioner for Assault. All three were charged with Disorderly Conduct.

Youth DUI

On June 24 at approximately 3:02 a.m., CPD officers responded to the Cattail Crossing development for a suspicious vehicle. It was reported that several subjects were exiting a vehicle and knocking on doors.

While en route officers located the vehicle that was reported to be involved traveling on Washington Street. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and its 17-year-old male driver. Officers observed alcoholic beverages within the vehicle and determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

During a search of the vehicle, multiple open containers were located, as well as cannabis. The 17-year-old male juvenile was arrested and transported to CPD for processing.

While at CPD, the juvenile submitted to a breath test which showed a result over the legal limit. The juvenile was referred to the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) and released to a guardian. The juvenile was charged with:

  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Driving Under the Influence Per Se
  • Driving While Intoxicated
  • Driving Without a License
  • Possession of Personal Use of Cannabis
DUI

On June 25, at approximately 6 p.m., CPD Officers responded to the area of the West Side Bypass for a reckless driving incident, in which a woman was reported to have driven all over the roadway, almost striking other vehicles.

Officers located the vehicle in the 300 block of Washington Street. A 33-year-old Cambridge woman told police she had been driving. She failed a field sobriety test and was arrested.

At CPD headquarters, she was found to be under the influence of drugs.

  • Driving Vehicle While So Far Impaired by Drugs Cannot Drive Safely
  • Driving Vehicle While Impaired by a Controlled Dangerous Substance
  • Failure of Individual to Display License
  • Driving on Suspended License
  • Driving While Suspended
  • Driving Without License
  • Fail Drive Right of Center
  • Unsafe Lane Changing
  • Driver Failure to Obey Properly Placed Traffic Control Device
  • Reckless Driving
  • Negligent Driving
  • Driving Off Road While Passing
  • Giving False Accident Report Information

She was later released on traffic citations.

DUI

On July 1, at approximately 11:34 p.m., CPD officers responded to Race St and Boundary Ave for a Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC).  The driver, a 25-year-old Cambridge man, said he had swerved to avoid another vehicle, causing his vehicle to run off the roadway striking a fence and a tree.

The man failed sobriety tests and was arrested. Carlos Alberto Hernandez-Mandez was charged with:

  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Per Se
  • Driving While Impaired by Alcohol
  • Failure of Vehicle Driver in Accident to Locate and Notify Owner of Unattended Damage

He was later released on citations.

Theft

On July 3, CPD officers responded to Walmart for a theft. Brooks Michael Campbell was charged with:

  • Theft $100 to Under $1,500
  • Trespassing

Campbell had been banned from Walmart. He was issued Criminal Citations and released.

Theft

On July 3, CPD officers responded to Walmart in reference to a theft. The total value of items not scanned was $149.60.

Tabria Leigh Wongus was charged with Theft $100 to Under $1,500. She was issued a Criminal Citation and released on her signature.

On July 6, CPD officers located a 28-year-old Cambridge woman in the 800 block of Park Lane. She was served a Criminal Summons and released on her signature.

Brittnee Rochester was charged with:

  • Theft $100 to Under $1,500 (3 counts)
  • Theft Less Than $100 (2 counts)

On July 6, CPD Officers located a 56-year-old Cambridge man in the 700 block of Pine Street. He was served a Criminal Summons and released on his signature.

Johnnie Mack Jenkins was charged with Theft $100 to Under $1,500.

Charges stem from a theft incident that occurred at WaWa on May 17, at 12:13 a.m. CPD officers were in WaWa talking with management when another employee reported a theft. Contact was made with Jenkins at the rear of the building where employees located boxes of candy valued at $107.64.

The items were returned, and Jenkins was banned from WaWa. CPD officers applied for charges against Jenkins.
