Board of Education meeting
The Board of Education of Dorchester County will conduct an open session at the Dorchester Career and Technology Center on Thursday at 5 p.m. After the start of the open session, the board will meet in closed session. At the conclusion of the closed session, the board will reconvene at 6 p.m. in the open regular session.
The agenda and related documents can be accessed online via BoardDocs on the Dorchester County Public Schools website at dcps.k12.md.us.
Anyone who would like to submit public comments electronically, to be included in the minutes, can email comments@dcpsmd.org by 2 p.m. Thursday. All Board of Education meetings will be livestreamed at townhallstreams.com/towns/dorchesterboe.
Public notices
Dorchester County Offices will be closed May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. All offices will reopen May 30.
All Dorchester County landfill locations will be closed on Memorial Day.

Dorchester County Library
- Did you know? The Cambridge branch of the Dorchester County Public Library has fishing rods available to borrow! The fishing rods are suitable for youth and adults and can be borrowed for up to seven days - just ask at the reference desk.
- The Dorchester Discussions book club meets Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in the Cambridge Library meeting room.
Wednesday Morning Artists
Our next meeting will be a special breakfast at the Hyatt! May 17, at 9:30 a.m., you are invited to join our weekly meeting of Wednesday Morning Artists, normally held at 900 Peachblossom Place, Cambridge.
We gather as a group of artists who work in all forms of media and artistic work. We exchange ideas and collaborate on art together. Lots of fun, no pressure, no dues.
The Hyatt Resort has our artists display/sell artwork. We are excited to have you stop by across from the coffee shop on the balcony, every Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
We feature different artists each week. Original jewelry, photography, woodworking, fiber art, basketry, sketches, cards, and paintings are offered. The assortment is different each week.
You can see many of our artists' work in the Dorchester Center for The Arts Members Show in June.
Our group has selected area businesses and landmarks to create a rendition in their specific medium. By doing this we want to show the connection of art and community and boost pride in our town. These works will be featured in a gallery show at Dorchester Center for the Arts in July.
Our artwork is also displayed in the windows of the Hunt Insurance office on Race Street next to 310 Gallery and across from Blackwater Bakery.
Meet Nathan of Dorchester
Sailing season is well underway on the Nathan of Dorchester! Charters have been happening for several weeks due to the lovely spring weather. Training began April 4 with 1:1 mentoring and now under sail sessions are happening Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The new volunteers are quickly learning and having fun at the same time.
Come visit the Nathan of Dorchester and hear about how you might become involved. Meet the Nathan, located at Long Wharf Park, Cambridge on Saturday, May 20, at 8:30 a.m. or Tuesday, May 23, at 5:30 p.m. If you think it’s for you, you may even hop on board for a training sail.

Young Eagles Rally
The County Council announced that the Cambridge-Dorchester Regional Airport will host an EAA Young Eagles Rally on May 27, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., weather permitting. The event’s original date was April 29, with poor weather forcing the change. Children ages 8 to 17 can receive a free airplane ride at no cost (parent/legal guardian approval and signature required). If your child is interested in the field of aviation or would just like to explore the excitement of flying, bring them out for a day filled with adventure, fun and food!

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
Fee-free days for National Wildlife Refuges have been set for 2023! In addition to Jan. 16, there will be no fee for the Wildlife Drive on the following dates in 2023:
June 19 - Juneteenth
Aug. 4 - Great American Outdoors Act Day
Sept. 23 – National Public Lands Day
Oct. 8 - First Sunday of National Wildlife Refuge Week
Nov. 11 – Veterans Day
Take advantage of them and get outside to enjoy your national wildlife refuge!
As a reminder to our paddlers, the Purple Trail is closed Oct. 31 through March 31 to provide a sanctuary area for migratory birds. The Green Trail and Orange Trail remain open year-round. To learn more about our paddling trails, or for a map of seasonally closed waters, visit our website.
Neavitt Flea Market
It’s time for the Neavitt Flea Market. The scenic waterfront town of Neavitt, near St. Michaels, is once again hosting a village-wide flea market. Set for June 10, from 8 a.m. to noon (rain date June 11 at 1 p.m.) the community flea market will have numerous tables offering bargains galore! Unusual collectibles, tools, boat gear, antiques, books, furniture, sports equipment, pottery, dishes, and housewares will be up for grabs in Neavitt’s county park. For kids, the adjacent playground has swings and slides.

Easton VFW sale
Easton VFW Post #5118 Auxiliary will hold a yard sale June 10 from 7:30-11:30 a.m. at the Post at 355 Glebe Road, Easton. Cost will be $10 per table (VFW owned) or $5 per table if you bring your own.

Blackwater summer jobs
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is offering Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) positions for young people ages 15 to 18 during the summer months in 2023. This year’s YCC program will last eight weeks, starting on June 20 and continuing until Aug. 11.
YCC recruits work 40 hours a week, 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day, and are paid minimum wage, currently $13.25 per hour. They must be a permanent resident of the United States, its territories or possessions, and be able to provide their own transportation to work. The refuge plans to hire up to four people for this program.
YCC recruits will spend several paid hours each week participating in environmental education programs. Recruits will be provided with all necessary safety and work equipment, and will be under constant supervision of an adult YCC Leader or other refuge staff.
Youths interested in the YCC program can obtain an application from Ranger Tom Miller by calling 410-221-8156, or email Thomas_J_Miller@fws.gov. Applications can be picked up and dropped off at the Blackwater Visitor Center, and are available on the refuge’s website. Applications must be returned by May 1.
Hurlock VFC’s centennial
Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company’s 100-year anniversary is approaching. Members will post products for sale on their Facebook page starting later this spring. Items will include challenge coins, T-shirts, and tumblers.
An announcement from the organization said there are also some events in the works, including an open house celebration, a banquet, parade, and possibly a firefighter-rescue competition. More information will be shared as plans are made, the statement said.
We have a food pantry in Vienna at the back of the white building across from Millie’s Restaurant every Friday from 3-6 p.m. If you have an immediate need, please contact 443-225-6789.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources
Harbor seals may be spotted along Maryland's ocean beaches from December until May. These marine mammals travel from New England to warmer shores during the colder months. If you spot a seal, keep a distance of at least 150 feet (about half a football field) and stay quiet and out of sight. To report a stranded seal or other marine mammals, call the 24-hour hotline: 800-628-9944.
Maryland residents of any age or disability can receive free, gently used durable medical equipment through the Maryland Department of Aging’s reuse center. Mediation Center
Mid Shore Community Mediation Center is seeking volunteers to join our team of Community Mediators. Members of our community, just like you, are who make our work possible - 91% of our mediators are volunteers, dedicating personal time to support their neighbors through difficult conversations.
To become a community mediator, no experience is necessary. We provide all the training needed.
