CAMBRIDGE - Dorchester Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Harriet Tubman Museum, is pleased to host the National African American Quilt Guild (NAAQG) for their inaugural meeting and exhibition: “A Celebration of African America Quilts and Fiber Arts.” The exhibit will open in the Main Gallery and the George B. Todd Performance Hall on Nov. 5 and run through Dec. 11.

A Community Arts Day is scheduled for Nov. 13, featuring a Trunk Show in the gallery with unique African American textiles, a quilting workshop open to all in the classroom, a Quilt Conversation on signs and symbols of the Underground Railroad, and a jazz concert with the Terry Koger Quintet in the performance hall at 7 p.m. Select quilts in the exhibition will be available for purchase.

To adhere to social distancing requirements, groups of 20 or more wishing to visit the exhibit are invited to call DCA at 410-228-7782 to arrange a reserved admission time.

The NAAQG is a nonprofit organization created to preserve and promote the history and legacy of African American quilting and quilters. Its founders, Rhonda Masters, Sharon Mooney and Laura Casmore of Texas, have embraced a mission of celebration, education and service to honor and elevate the African American quilting legacy. November is also the kickoff for the Wednesday Morning Artists and Friends Gallery of Gifts. This special holiday exhibit will open in the Front Gallery on Nov. 5 and run through Dec. 23, featuring a variety of unique hand-crafted work including jewelry, paintings, woven sculpture and woodworking. Wednesday Morning Artists is a diverse group of local artists united by a desire to promote art for public and private enjoyment.

Second Saturday Artists’ Receptions will be held for both these exhibits on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, from 5-7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
