Fall at Blackwater NWR

Visitors can experience the changing of the seasons at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge by participating in one of the guided birding tours in the fall of 2023. Fall birding tours at Blackwater NWR highlight the returning migratory waterfowl.

Guided birding tours take place on the following Sunday mornings: Nov. 26 and Dec. 17, led by refuge volunteer Terry Allen, and on Dec. 10, led by refuge volunteer Ron Ketter. Participants will meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8 a.m. Tours may last three to four hours. The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various hotspots around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive.

Binoculars and field guides are highly recommended. Dress for the weather. There is no fee or advanced registration for these activities. For further information, call 410-228-2677 or visit fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.

Vox Concordia concert

Vox Concordia, the Lower Eastern Shore’s newest choral group, will present its program, Paths to Peace, at 4 p.m. Nov. 19, in the Great Hall on the campus of Salisbury University. The program is inspired by days revered and celebrated in November – Veterans Day and Thanksgiving – and describes the journey through war, reconciliation, peace and gratitude.

The concert will feature guest soloist John Wesley Wright, with percussionists and guest singers from Salisbury University.

Vox Concordia continues to champion living composers with pieces by Sarah Meneely-Kyder, Larry Nickel, Paul Aitken, Matthew Culloton, Tim Brent, Sally Whitwell, John Bucchino, Christopher Tin and Claude Debussy, with texts by Wilfred Owen, John McCrae (“In Flanders Fields”), the Beatitudes, and a Swahili adaptation of The Lord’s Prayer.

Tickets are available in advance through Salisbury University or at the door for $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and $5 for students. More information about tickets and the group itself is online at voxsingers.com.
