FELTON — Officers rescued 76 animals from a mobile home Monday after they were found living in cramped, unsanitary conditions, according to the Department of Health and Social Services.

A news release said the Office of Animal Welfare’s Animal Services Department received a call from the Delaware State Police at approximately 2 p.m. about a potential animal cruelty case.

Officers arrived to discover 66 small dogs, nine cats and one bird living in inhumane conditions, the release said. The dogs were found huddled together in cramped rooms and covered in feces and urine.

None of the dogs had been sterilized, and they continued to reproduce. They range in age from newborn to senior.

The animals were safely removed from the home and transported to the Brandywine Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Georgetown, where they are receiving care and being assessed, the statement noted.

The animals showed varying degrees of medical issues, with some underweight and others suffering from skin or eye problems. They were all infested with fleas, the release said.

Criminal charges are pending.
