Delaware State's Muniz joins Robinson in basketball transfer portal

DOVER — Nothing lasts forever — not on college basketball rosters anyway.

Delaware State has lost two of its marquee players, Martaz Robinson and then Jevin Muniz, to the NCAA Transfer Portal in the last two days.

Robinson, a senior with another season of eligibility remaining, put his name in the portal on Sunday. That was the day after the Hornets ended their season with a 79-66 loss to Seattle in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational Tournament.

Muniz, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, who made second-team All-MEAC, then followed by going into the portal on Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2 Robinson averaged 15.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists as DSU went 16-19 this winter, finishing with the most wins for the program since 2015. He was named first-team All-MEAC and reached 1,000 points for his career.

Robinson was honored on the Hornets’ Senior Night during the regular season.

“Martaz Robinson has been a staple in this program since my arrival,” DelState coach Stan Waterman wrote at the time..”It has been a pleasure to watch him grow and mature as a player and young man.”

Early in the season, Robinson talked about why he stayed at DSU, even when the Hornets weren’t winning. He said he was happy to still be a member of the program.

“The coaches are like another father figure for me — each one,” said Robinson. “They’re always there for me. They’re always helping me, even when I’m struggling. I’m glad the coaches stayed with me.“

Muniz reached double figures in points in all but six games this season. He netted 31 points in a game against Morgan State before averaging 15.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists.

Both Muniz and Robinson made the All-MEAC Tournament team after helping the Hornets reach the league finals.

"Delaware State has been my home for  past 2 years and I appreaciate the love, support and mentorship I received," Muniz wrote on social media. "It was amazing.

"I'd like to say thank you to my teammates, coaches and fans for the support! After deeper thoughts and talks with my family I will be entering my name into the transfer portal."
