Delaware sends wildfire engine crew to Southern California

Posted

SMYRNA — The Delaware Forest Service mobilized a three-person wildland fire engine crew from Blackbird State Forest on Friday for an assignment in Wawona, California.

Working with the Yosemite National Park’s Emergency Communications Center and various agencies from around the country, the group will be patrolling and isolating blazes started due to human activity and lightning strikes.

The predicted fire danger for the area is extreme/high for the next seven days, with an active 841-acre burn in the park, which is creating closures there.

According to the Forest Service, the 14-day assignment, which began Monday, will require their combined 45 years’ experience in logistical and operational roles to isolate the new starts, so that they do not turn into larger fires.

The service is seeking to perform a crew swap around mid-August to continue assistance in the area.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, 64 large fires have burned 311,669 acres in nine states this year. More than 11,500 wildland firefighters and support personnel are now assigned to incidents across the country.
