Delaware landowners invited to attend wetland easement workshop

Posted

HARRINGTON — Delaware landowners are encouraged to attend a wetland easement workshop from 5-8 p.m. March 19 at the Harrington Fire Hall.

The workshop will help Delaware landowners learn more about the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Wetland Reserve Easement program and the benefits of restoring proper wetland function in their wet woods or wet, unproductive crop fields while protecting the land from development.

Natural Resources Conservation Service offers financial incentives for landowners to restore and protect wetlands on their property.

At the workshop, Natural Resources Conservation Service easement program staff will provide an overview of the Wetland Reserve Easement program including eligibility, easement types, and payment rates. Wetland Reserve Easement landowners will also be on site to share their first-hand experience with the program.

Dinner will be served following the workshop and representatives will be available to answer questions.

“Through the WRE Program, NRCS can provide technical and financial assistance to restore and protect previously drained farmland or woodland. Landowners receive monetary compensation while benefitting the environment and retaining ownership of the land,” Stewart said.

“Delaware NRCS recently adjusted the payment rate which allows for easement compensation to be more competitive with current real estate prices.”

Seating is limited so attendees are encouraged to pre-register by March 8. For more information or to register, visit sussexconservation.org/events or call 302-856-3990, ext. 3.
