Delaware Farm Bureau members offer lunch to legislators

Posted

DOVER — Members of the Delaware Farm Bureau, 4-H and the National FFA Organization shared their love of agriculture with lawmakers at Legislative Hall on March 30.

Hosted by the bureau’s Promotion & Education Committee, the luncheon — prepared by Bill Clifton of Fifer’s, Wyoming — fed dozens of legislators and staff. It included beef from Ramsey’s Farm, Wilmington, and Powers Farm, Townsend, and chicken from Mountaire. Rolls and cookies came from Fortunata’s Bakery, Milford.

4-H State Teen Council officers Kyle Kerr, Carter Bradley and Ava Raughley, as well as FFA state president Noah Dixon, state vice president Hannah Haigh and state treasurer Kyle Gares, were on hand.

Rep. Sherry Dorsey Walker said seeing the young people helping the Delaware Farm Bureau gave her feelings of pride.

“Since I became a legislator in Dover, I asked to be put on the Agriculture Committee,” she said. “Ag matters to me, and it’s so important that our young people learn about cultivating the land. In the process of cultivating the land, we’re creating opportunities for life.”

Along with talking to the younger ag volunteers, lawmakers had a chance to mingle with seasoned farmers and agriculture professionals as they picked up their lunch.

The Delaware Farm Bureau stays in contact with the senators and representatives of the General Assembly to monitor the progress of legislation important to producers. The agency also hosts legislative breakfasts annually to connect with lawmakers at the county level and sends copies of the weekly membership newsletters and bimonthly newspapers, among other ways.
