Delaware court's student art contest focused on desegregation cases

WILMINGTON — The Delaware Court of Chancery, in partnership with the Court of Chancery Historical Society is hosting an art competition to celebrate history through art.

The contest seeks submissions of art depicting and celebrating the historic Delaware cases desegregation of Belton v. Gebhart and Bulah v. Gebhart that directly contributed to the 1954 United States Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education.

Students are asked to create artwork that relates and/or is inspired by the cases. For example, students can create art depicting any of the people or places that were featured in the decision including plaintiffs, judges, lawyers, or locations such as the schools or towns.

To enter email a digital picture of artwork to Chancery_Art_Competition@delaware.gov by June 16 with the contest submission form online at at courts.delaware.gov/chancery/art-competition.aspx

The deadline for submissions is June 16. The competition is open to students in grades 7-12

The first place winner earns $500, second place $300 and third place $200. The first place winner’s artwork will be displayed at the Courthouse.

Winners will be invited to attend a reception on June 30 at 3 p.m. at the Leonard L. Williams Justice Center.
