U.S. Senate hopeful Blunt Rochester sets Delaware fundraising record for federal candidates

WILMINGTON — During the first quarter of 2024, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester raised more than $1 million in her race to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate, her campaign announced Tuesday.

The mark brings the Democratic representative’s fundraising total to more than $5 million since beginning her run in June 2023 — setting a record for the most a federal candidate in Delaware has garnered by this point in an election cycle, according to the campaign.

In the announcement, Rep. Blunt Rochester thanked her supporters throughout the state and beyond, such as the nurses, teachers, firefighters and retirees “who have placed their trust in our mission to bring Bright Hope to the U.S. Senate.”

“We are just getting started. In a moment sometimes clouded by cynicism, the groundswell of support we have seen throughout this campaign is a reminder of the promise of Bright Hope,” she said in the statement.

“Bright Hope is the fight, in all of us, to ensure everyone has access to affordable health care, lower costs, reproductive freedom, environmental justice, safe communities, and the benefits of Social Security and Medicare. I am deeply humbled by people hearing, embracing, and investing in our message.”

Rep. Blunt Rochester is the only Democrat to announce a bid to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Tom Carper, a fellow Democrat who announced last May that he would not seek reelection in 2024.

There are two Republicans and one Independent in the race. Republican Eric Hansen has raised nearly $12,000 since launching his campaign in October 2023 and sits with nearly $422,000 on hand after personal loans and contributions. There is no fundraising information available for Republican Bill Taylor, according to the Federal Election Commission.

The Independent Party of Delaware candidate, former Democratic state Sen. Michael Katz, contributed $1,000 to his bid but is not accepting donations, campaigning on a platform to remove financial influence from government.

Delaware’s primary election will be Sept. 10, while its general election will coincide with the presidential vote Nov. 5.
