CRISFIELD — It’s been nearly two years since a film crew and a British choirmaster came to Crisfield to bring together a disparate group of singers for an episode of a reality TV show. Now on Monday, Dec. 29 the long-awaited broadcast of It Takes a Choir will air at 5 p.m. on the USA Network.

“Crabbin’ and Choirin’ in Crisfield” will be the sixth in what is being billed as a “Season One Marathon” of eight one-hour shows that begin at noon. Gareth Malone, a choirmaster and broadcaster who first appeared on TV in the three-part BBC documentary series “The Choir” in 2006, came to each community to unite an unlikely mix of people through music.

For the Crisfield songsters, it was an uplifting experience especially after it came just a few months after superstorm Sandy washed through the community. They rehearsed at Crisfield High School and held a culminating performance Jan. 27, 2013 at the Mar-Va Theater in Pocomoke City.

What followed was the creation in March of that year of the Crisfield Community Choir, which practiced at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and performed at various local events. Despite its best intentions, however, that group under the direction of Christi Pruitt went silent about a year later as too few singers were participating.

It Takes a Choir was anticipated to air in the fall of 2013, but never did, and there were hopes it would make the 2014 fall lineup, but it was dropped again. Some critics believe the USA Network is packaging all of the episodes together into one showing to get it off the books before 2015.
