Constitution Day to be marked with bells throughout Somerset County

Posted

Bells will be ringing across Somerset County starting 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 to celebrate Constitution Day.

Six churches are participating. In Princess Anne, listen for the change ringing bells in the tower of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church one block west of downtown on Church Street between Prince William and Washington streets, and the bell in the tower of Manokin Presbyterian Church on the north bank of Manokin River Park.

In Mt. Vernon, Asbury Church is taking part, and in Revell’s Neck the bell of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church will ring.

The two churches in Crisfield participating are Immanuel United Methodist Church at 206 West Main Street, and Asbury United Methodist Church on Lawsonia Road and Asbury Avenue, home to 11 century-old chimes.

The bell ringing was organized by the Nanticoke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The National Society of the DAR petitioned Congress in 1955 to dedicate September 17-23 of each year as Constitution Week.

Congress adopted the resolution and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into Public Law in 1956.

In 2004, September 17th was declared Constitution Day, as this was the actual date in 1787 that the U.S. Constitution was signed. Local chapters of the DAR coordinate bell ringing across the country and encourage any businesses, schools, churches or individuals who have bells to participate.
