Venues change for Smyrna, Dover performances of musical

Posted

DOVER — Two first two stagings of “Compassion Street — The Musical,” which showcases the effects of homelessness, have been moved.

The first showing will take place Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church at 20 W. Mount Vernon St., Smyrna, at 7:30 p.m. It was originally scheduled for the Smyrna High School Theater.

The second performance will be at Wesley United Methodist Church at 209 S. State St., Dover, at 7:30 Friday night. It was previously planned for the Schwartz Center for the Arts.

A third performance — on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sacred Heart Oratory at 917 N. Madison St., Wilmington — remains unchanged.

The two-hour show features 17 songs, with a PowerPoint presentation, props, six singers, a storyteller and three musicians.

The cast includes Seth Bowser, music composer and pianist; Edward Dawley on bass fiddle; Denise Lano on flute; Denise Russell, soprano; Charm Sloven, alto; Steve Davis, tenor; Christoper McDowell, tenor; Elijah August, tenor; Jamar Boyer, baritone; and Paul Mast, producer and storyteller.

Mr. Mast experienced firsthand the plight of the homeless population during a street sabbatical he took through several different cities a couple years ago.

“It was an unstructured sabbatical, where I learned life lessons I would not have learned in classrooms,” the Clayton resident said. “For 42 years, as a priest, my life was structured and defined by calendars. But I did something radically different for this experience.

“I desired a change of rhythm and landscape for my interior life. So, I became a pilgrim with the homeless, downsizing my life and acquiring their rhythm of walking, begging and seeking shelter.”
