College Roundup: Milford’s Petty earns honor at Albany

Former Milford High softball standout Morgan Petty has added a pretty nice award to her college resume.

A junior utility player at Albany, Petty was named the America East Conference Player of the Year.

Petty was a second-team all-conference pick last spring. This season, she led the league in RBI with 46 and was second in batting average at .371.

Petty also ranked second in the league in runs with 33, hits with 46 and home runs with nine. She was fourth in America East with 11 doubles.

In two-plus seasons with the Great Danes, Petty has 18 homers. Albany went 23-15 during the regular season.

Hens take on Hoyas

No. 15 Delaware (12-5) will have its hands full when it faces No. 2 Georgetown (15-1) in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday night.

The contest is being played at the Hoyas’ Cooper Field at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.

The Blue Hens are 0-3 against Georgetown, with the contests being played between 2008-10. Delaware lost the last meeting just 13-11 in 2010.

The Hens’ 20-8 win over Robert Morris in an NCAA play-in game on Wednesday was their first NCAA tourney victory since 2007. Delaware is 4-6 all-time in the NCAAS.

After winning six games in a row, Delaware does have momentum on its side.

“I’m so proud and so excited for this team,” Blue Hen coach Ben DeLuca said on Wednesday. “They’ve worked so hard for an opportunity like this and to have a performance like that. From day one they have bought into this process. They played so well under the lights at Tubby Raymond (Field) and it was great and really special.

“Today’s game was a quick turnaround and it didn’t deter them. Every one of them has worked their tail off this season.”

NFL exec at DSU

DeMaurice F. Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, gave the keynote address for Delaware State’s commencement ceremony for master’s and doctoral graduates on Thursday.

In March 2020, Smith negotiated his second long-term collective bargaining agreement with the NFL. The 11-year deal introduced an additional game to the regular season, while providing players with their guaranteed highest share of NFL revenue in league history.

Cole Snyder, an offensive lineman from Montana State, said he is transferring to Delaware. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder is originally from Calgary. ... The Delaware women’s soccer team has picked up transfers Nicole Binkley (Rutgers) and Grace Harvey (UMBC). ... Delaware has offered Smyrna High receiver Yamir Knight a scholarship — making him the third Knight brother to get an offer from the Blue Hens.
