Delaware State University has swept the MEAC Rookie of the Year basketball awards.

Freshman Devin Morgan earned the honor on the men’s side while freshman NaJai Pollard won it for the women, the league announced on Friday afternoon.

The last time the Hornets were awarded the Rookie of the Year was in 2012, when they also swept the award. That was when Tahj Tate won for the men and Tierra Hawkins won on the women’s side.

Pollard had won the Rookie of the Week award eight times this season. She recorded seven double-doubles, was 12th in the MEAC in scoring (11.3 ppg) and seventh in rebounds (8.1 rpg).

“At the beginning of the year when we were going through our preseason, she did a great job on the glass and kind of just finding different spots on the floor to score,” said DSU first-year head coach Barbara Burgess. “I told her if she can do that when the season starts, she will have a good shot at winning MEAC Rookie of the Year.”

Morgan also racked up a bunch of Rookie of the Week awards, winning it six times. He led the Hornets in scoring with 12.2 points per game which is good enough for 23rd in the MEAC.

Other conference awards on the men’s side included Howard University guard James Daniel III as the MEAC Player of the Year,  Bethune-Cookman’s LaRon Smith as the Defensive Player of the Year and South Carolina State’s Murray Gavin as the conference Coach of the Year.

For the women, Hampton’s Malia Tate-DeFreitas was Player of the Year, Bethune-Cookman’s Kailyn Williams was Defensive Player of the Year and Bethune-Cookman’s Vanessa Blair-Lewis was the Coach of the Year.

Warren lights it up at Harford

Cape Henlopen High product Jon Warren has played a key role in Harford Community College’s success this season.

The Fighting Owls were the No. 3 seed in the NJCAA Region XX Basketball Championships, and they won both games by a combined 42 points for their first region title in school history. Warren was named to the All-Tournament team.

Harford travels to Harcum on today for the District Championship. Both teams will advance to the 2016 NJCAA Championships the following week in Hutchinson, Kansas for Harford’s first-ever appearance in the 24-team field.

Warren is averaging 10.0 points per game in his second season at Harford and has started 20 of the Fighting Owls’ 29 games.

• Delaware is hosting the Bob Hannah Invitational (baseball) and the Blue Hens Blast Tournament (softball) this weekend. Both the Blue Hens and Delaware State are slated to compete in each tournament.

• Delaware’s women’s lacrosse team has started the season 4-1 for the second-straight season. The Blue Hens have had at least six players tally a goal in each of its five games so far this season.

• Polytech grad Conner Chasanov has made his pitching debut this year for the UD baseball team after missing last season with a medical redshirt. The redshirt freshman has appeared twice and hasn’t allowed a run while striking out three.

• Caesar Rodney product Sean MacLeish and Cape Henlopen High grad Blake Mann are tied for second in goals for the Bridgewater men’s lacrosse team with eight apiece. Dan Brown, another CR grad, is also on the team and has eight assists, tops on the team, through the first three contests.
